Our house was robbed last night. The burglars left behind some nice prints and a jacket (with DNA on the collar of course) and the cops know who one of them is - just not where to find him. Interesting choice of swag. They took my Wave but not the Victorinox Explorer that was beside it on the hall table. They also took some Sony in-ear headphones (which I have never really liked) but left behind the Sennheisers that cost about 10 times as much and sound 100 times better.
Most things are replaceable but they snaffled my wife's great-grandfather's watch which is no doubt lost and irreplacable. I'm looking forward to seeing them in court.
Talking to the SOCO about the jacket he told me he has just worked up a case where a murderer left behind a jacket with his driving license in the pocket. Too easy.

All this happened in Kiwiland? Tough luck on that heirloom. Now it's my guess that it's probably at a pawn shop, fleamarket or something? Fella like that is just killing time before he's made an example of running foul of the law.
Damn, with a WAVE as an accomplice, there ain't nothing he can't do. Someone's gotta stop this dirtbag before he ends up hurting legal ownership of multitools.

I was robbed of $2000. of gadgets two months ago (lots of mutitools and flashlights). They caught the two guys 1 hour after it happened. Unfortunatly they dropped the stuff off at someone elses house and the police was only able to get a few things back when the occupants decided to ask for a search warrant. The police told me the two who robbed me confessed , so there is no judge who will issue a search warrant since it an open and shut case (ie case closed). One of the guys is 15, so the law here states I cannot sue the parents for anything since he is a juvenile. The other guy is 21 and is sitting in jail. I could get a judgement against him but it would only be for 1/2 the amount and the guy never had a job anyway. So no restitution will probably ever be paid.

Sorry to hear about your misfortune but I probably would have taken the Leatherman and left the Victorinox myself;)

The second time I was attacked by a knife toting SOB, he was carrying a Leatherman PST. If he was little better with ifighter, I would be 6' under.

You can still recoup your losses. Depending on the laws in your jurisdiction, you may be able to do the following
  • File a civil action now, and get a judgement against him. The ruling will be good for a number of years (varies by state), and usually can be renewed. If when he comes to age, and refuses to pay, attach his wages. No doubt he'll have a job, even if it McDonalds. You'll eventually get something out of him.
Being a minor does not mean that he can get away with his crimes. As the saying goes, "infancy is a shield, not a sword".

The other guy is 21 and is sitting in jail. I could get a judgement against him but it would only be for 1/2 the amount and the guy never had a job anyway.
How much time is he getting? If he may get probation or paroled soon, one of the terms of his release may be that he needs to get a job- as part of his rehabilitation. Have a judgement against him, so you can (start) collect(ing) if/when that occurs. If necesary, you can get him then- by attaching his wages if necesary.
