I am thinking about buying some knives made by a Robb Klaas. Has anybody here in the forums ever heard of him as a knifemaker. and what kind of information do you have. Any help would be appreciated. I think I might have a good buy here but dont know for sure.
thanks jack

Assuming its Robert Klass of Germany, the company has been around since God was a boy ( as one of my friends like to say ). Also goes by the brand Kissing Crane. I have a couple Autos from them, nice knives. Cant really comment on the steel as I've never actually used them. If its a custom maker with the same name then I dont know of him. Good luck - Charles

I have seen it spelled Robert Klaas quite often, including in Bernard Levines Guide To Knives And Their Values. This company started doing business in 1834 and are still around today. They are the current makers of Kissing Crane and Hen & Rooster knives. I have only handled a few knives from this company and they were from good to very good quality. I would choose one that had a blade made from carbon steel (although they just call it Solingen carbon steel, whatever the heck that is), as the stainless that is used by this company seems to be 420. Since they don't list which 420, it leads me to believe that it is 420J2. Not a good knife steel at all.

I have a number of Kissing Crane knives. The carbon steel is good. I have noticed that the sodbuster patterns, which are very inexpensive, are not as good at holding an edge as the standard slipjoints like the stockman or canoe. I have had very good performance with my Kissing Crane slipjoints in carbon steel, better than the Boker, Old Timer, Case CV, Henckels, and Eye Brand carbon steel blades that I have.

Keith,
Which Levine's guide do you have 4th or 5th ed ?
I have heard bad things about the 5th ed. Actually talked to Levine about it ( e mail)
I have the 4th ed on my Christmas list ? $ 50 bucks

I was looking to buy several knives for 35 bucks. the 2 Klaas's I thought were the " best pieces". Well I think the deal is off,I am being out bid... so anyway I spent enough this week.
I did buy 2 old Westerns fix blades... I believe to be made here in Boulder years ago. for 21.00
I blame Ted E for this he got me started.. I bought 5 knives in the past week....and some junk for the Mrs...

I have editions 2 and 4. I wouldn't buy edition 5 if it were the only one available. It was not done by Bernard Levine and he himself states that it is not up to par.
