I picked up the 3 5/8 Robert Herder Folding Knife in Olivewood about a week ago. This knife is a "sodbuster" pattern made in Germany. The blade is carbon steel and hammer forged in Solingen. The overall cost, with the Olivewood scales, was $60.00 USD including delivery. Many Thanks to Trevor for pointing out the online dealer that sold me this knife. Markus was a pleasure to do business with!
I put the knife through its paces and I can say I am very happy with the knife. Overall, the blade came well polished, ground, and centered in the knife. No wobble or slop with good walk and talk. The spring has plenty of snap but not too much. The scales were well finished and everything was flush. Overall, no complaints on fit and finish.
The blade is the real star of this knife. This sucker is a damned laser. This blade slices as well or better than my Opinels.
The only drawback on the Herder is the thickness of the scales. It is a bit harder to pocket than the Redneck or my Case, but nothing that is going to keep me from carrying the knife. It is a minor issue but worth noting.
On to the pics...
Side by Side with the Redneck. Just a bit shorter. I don't find it hinders my grip and I have medium sized hands.
Good blade profile.
Thicker scales than the Redneck.
This blade is thin and an awesome slicer. As good or better than the Opinels. The tang of the blade is thicker on the Herder with the spine being the same thickness as the Redneck. The overall grind is very thin.
Hope you enjoyed the review!
