I have seen several photos of a survival knife made by Robert Parish on this forum. Is Roberts knives still available, does he have a web site? I really dont known much about him, can anyone give me some information.

Thanks - Ron

Hey again Myakka,

I'm surprised you didn't ask me about him when you e-mailed me last time, as I've had a Robert Parish 8" Survivor knife for over 10 years now, and it's one of my most prized knives. If you look over my website, I've got some photos of it, but I've got a LOT more that haven't been put up.

I did a lot of research on Robert, and have talked to him on a few occasions. Unfortunately, Mr. Parish got out of the knife making business quite a few years ago. His main reason was that he couldn't make enough money to keep doing it full-time, and decided to pursue other interests. A real shame as far as I'm concerned, because his survival knife is one of the best examples I've ever owned. This would also explain why it's one of the only ones I've ever kept as well.

Robert now restores antique surveying equipment, and has for a number of years. I guess he does a lot better financially at that, than he did with knives. Again, it's a shame he left the knife scene, but I certainly understand his motivation. I just recently acquired a Chris Reeve Project I via a deal with a fellow forum member, and I'm happy to say that this is the only knife that I feel will serve me well enough to finally put my Parish into retirement. I plan on refinishing mine with the help of fellow forum member and knifemaker Burchtree, to see if we can get it looking like new again.

If you would like more information, or simply wish to discuss Mr. Parish further, by all means, feel free to drop me an e-mail. Cheers!

Hey caine,

I know there are quite a few fans of Robert Parish out there, which is where I gleaned some of my own information from. The road to acquiring my Survivor was a long one indeed, and even moreso because I was living in Canada at the time! I used to work for a gentleman in his knife shop, and he happened to know Mr. Parish on a personal level. If you wanted a Parish in Canada, he was the guy to talk to. It took me almost 3 years to get the cash together to buy mine, and it wasn't long after that he stopped taking orders entirely. I know for a fact that there are many members of the Canadian military that are proud owners of this knife. I also handled the sunfish, as well as another version of the Survivor that he made in very limited numbers. This had the _exact_ same blade shape as the Survivor, sawteeth and all, but was only about 5-inches in length. I've seen very few of these.

The Beast that's on my site was custom made for me by request, and it certainly does look pretty fearsome, doesn't it? I'm pursuing other versions of this knife, and I hope to add a few variations over the next couple of years. Of course, this all hinges on whether makers continue to make these knives. I plan on rebuilding my knife collection photo album for my site, as I've got tons of photos of knives that I've also traded/sold over the past couple of years. I'd also like to get some better quality pictures of of my current collection, as my skill in taking them has gotten markedly better.

Truth be told, I've also got some secret plans for a knife-related website that would be a great community resource, but I'm keeping that hush-hush until I do more research, and weigh all the pros and cons of having it available. I'm hoping to possibly offer what I think would be a great service to our community, but it will require more work to see if it would be feasible.

Thanks for the information, and as for the Beast, I shot an email to Robert Hankins, the maker and he has decided not to make any more of those. :(
