All,

What could someone tell me about Robert Weinstock? I like his work but never see it online. A few years ago, he had posted on Don Fogg's forum a tsuba that was carved from Rich Furrer's damascus, and it was simply mind boggling.

I have (very rarely) seen pictures of his work for sale, and they seem to reach stratospheric levels...

Here are a couple pics of his work:

He's about one of the nicest guys you'd ever meet and talented as you can get. His design and carving is among the best. I'm sure he'd love to talk to you if you decide that's something you'd like to do.

Here is a sculptured lockback by Robert Weinstock (1999),
combining classic and futuristic features in its design.
From the collection of Dr. Pierluigi Peroni, Italy.

All the best,

HECK of a carver!!!

His proportions and shapes don't appeal to me, and his prices don't either.

This is not dismissal, or meant to be dismissive, either.

There is a butt for every seat...and if his work appeals to you, than compared to others(Bell, Olzewski, current Steigerwalts.....etc.) it is a better value, on par, or superior technically, and a bit rarer.

Hope this helps.

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

Oh, I'm not really in the market for one. I just got offered a poignard for $5,000 and it's much too rich for my blood. But I certainly am intrigued enough to try to know more about him.

His work - especially the carved damascus & gold 1-edge folders - does appeal to me more than that of the makers you mention.

Joss,

Robert use to attend the OKCA and the BAKCA Shows. There are some knives held by collectors in the Bay Area. I believe the OKCA attracted a serious collector from the islands. He would usually have only one piece for sale at either event. I don't think I ever saw two pieces for sale at the same time on his table. He would show his carving talent at the BAKCA Show and talked about his artistry. I have seen a few of his works still in there raw stages, pre carving. He has the talent and the artistry to create shapes and lines that bring out more beauty in the Damascus steel.
I believe his work currently is being sought after in Europe.
Perhaps one day I’ll drop the hammer on that knife order.

I met Bob and took an immediate liking to him. His work is an acquired taste, but it is VERY apparent he is at the top of his skills. I like 'em.

These are actually (2) different knives and one backspine shot. Sneeky. ;)
