Hi,

back from WH Smith in Paris, I've bought some US magazines. In one of them (Men'sJournal) I have found a page on RYP with the H.E.S.T. pictured in it:

RYP said about his HEST: "It's good for persuading a stoned Liberian child-soldier that the next present he gives himself won't be your camera." (sic)

I'm not so fan of that kind of statement. The HEST is a tool and it's here featured as a intimidating weapon which is not really his main or even secondary purpose... Not a very clever way to talk about knives. Children with guns (and under drugs) can be very happy shooters and they don't use kodakrom... My experience with armed child gangs in brazilian favelas would make me shy to shine a blade to convince them. Communication and local allied are a better way to get you out of arm with them. Anyway, perharps RYP story was longer and clever. But that quote of him about the use of his HEST is rather... clumsy. Or is it that "Men's journal" general bearing who is stupid ?:jerkit: (There are also James Ellroy Survival Skills page 146... :barf:)

WOW that is a clumsy quote, it is okay to feel that way but to express it like that is not very responsible. I wonder if it was taken out of context.... curious to see if RYP chimes in here.

With all due respect, maybe he is making a fact based statement from his experience. My aunt lives in Rio de Janeiro, she constantly reminds my parents to remove all jewelry when visiting. People (children) become desensitized when violence is a way of life for them. That is rough and makes me appreciate where I live.

I see nothing wrong with the quote itself...is it not true?

99% of media outlets will often take a provocative sentence like that and print it without anything that comes before or after it. He might have spoke at length about the HEST and it's uses, but the magazine chose the "violent" use.

I'm certain there is much more wiser quotes to give an example of how a great knife like the HEST can be used in critical situation...
The "Now this is a knife" from Crocodile Dundee is a dangerous cliché...
So perharps the whole story was wiser, like RYP offered his HEST instead of his camera to the child-soldier? I don't know... critical situation are like some kind of prototypes, they happen once and are hardly reproductible...

But I never like when a tool is presented like a weapon cliché... and IMHO this is what transpired from that quote and article.

Even RYP's gear looks brandnew and he hasen't even opened the crystle sauce also his boots aren't broke in what's up with this guy???
HA HA HA! I just couldn't resist.

I'd have to read the whole story to see what part they used the quote from.

There are just "pack shots" of equipment.
But about breaking in:

"For every shiny colorful piece of gear you own, 100 local guys wish they owned it too. That's why everything I deal with is drab and dirty and beat up."

Very wise !
The same for a brazilian trip: no expensive watch, no jewel, no expensive cam...

I know just what you mean. I was just jabbing at the (alittle to new thread)

RAT PACK #91

The gear photos are new products, not my personal gear. If you read the entire piece you will see that my boots were just replaced after 30 years of faithful use.

Don't quite understand the quote about Liberia since I spent a bit of time in combat with the Small Boys Unit of the LURD (my given name was General Jungle Fire) and can tell you that I still own all my cameras. :)

Nothing about political correctness here, just not the best quote to resume the use of a RAT knife IMHO.
This is not obviously RYP's choice to quote that but the magazine which has decided to highlight that use of his knife.
Perharps not the best quote about it, that's all... No big deal... :-)
