I have a piece of some sort of Rose marble...or granite???

Anyway, its about 6" thick and bounces a hammer better than anything else I have.

Has anyone ever forged on a rock? I am thinking it would break butI have heard this can be a good material to use.

I haven't done it. I thought one of the problems was they didn't bounce (lucky for you). Wayne Godard has writen about it, including in the current issue of Blade.

It works. Support the rock.
What do you think early smiths foged their anvils on? :D
Don't work the edges.

what about the edges? Not woeking them....I assume that they'll crack off?

Yeah...I've been wondering the same thing. Wayne says it's quieter than a steel anvil.

Anybody else use one?

How hard can you hit on it?

Dan

I'm not sure if 6 inches would be enough though. The pic in Blade shows a piece about 3 feet tall, probably rejected headstone or something. But if you already have it, give it a shot!

taller, yes, but probably not thicker. That'd be the way to go, if you wanted one. A big headstone turned on end and mounted in some wood....or maybe a tub of concrete....?

Yes that's what they used in the old days. That and sharpening. I saw a program the other day when some primative group was going to slaughter a goat . The man went to the nearest rock and sharpened his knife !! I laughed at that. But of course arkansas stones are after all rocks.

and don't forget the ol safety glasses for that experiment.

Safety Mode off. :D

The real arkansas stones are cut from Novaculite rock :)
but most are glued Novaculite dust ..

I did a thread a while ago on granite anvils
but the thread was lost I think in the troubles Spike had here...
but the Vikings used them..

It may be granite. I looked at it again tonight. It may be about7.5" thick. I got it from a stone (headstone) cutting company's leftovers. I may go back and do some hunting!

First I have to build a forge. I just received 2 freon tanks this evening so in the near future!....I shall try it out...

hey dan. I'll email you my first hammon blade. its an 0-1 and shows up well!

Headstones are mostly granite. The pollution eats up the marble, limestone used to be real popular in this neck of the woods, you used what you had. Lotsa old limestone headstones you cain't read anymore.

Stones are consumables I'd think. Rock is vairable. I had a piece of old marble dresser top I tooled leather on for years, like twenty years. One day in broke about a third of length, the next day it broke in two.
I just made smaller articles of leather. :)

I think the african forgeing film I saw in '95 they were useing a stone anvil, and another piece of stone as a hammer(no handle).

Kinda big boulder with a flat spot dresssed in it. IIRC

Hmm-m-m-m-m, I have a marble orchard right across the street. I could heat a piece, run real fast across the street with my hammer,................... .Maybe not. Our County Attorney(prosecuter) lives right next door to me.

 I would think if they forging, they would be been smart enough to forge a Hammer to use  and then again it may have been that steel was at a premium too :(
