Why is the Rock Lobster so expensive? I like the look of them so I went to order one and was suprised to see on a US web site they are about $70 dearer than a Millie. Here in Australia they are $120 dearer.

1) Collaboration model. Jens Anso doubtless gets a few bucks for each one they sell.
2) Entirely new model using all new tooling. That's a big investment to try to recover. Sal recently posted that is costs around $250,000 to bring a new model to market.
3) Nested liners. Extra machining required to make the scales so the liners fit inside recesses insead of being exposed. That was what Jens wanted, so that is how it is made.

4) Made in Japan. I know Sal has posted that costs more than making it in the US, just don't recall how much more.

I brought that up and other items about the RL in this post as well

You know, I didn't like it much at first, but it's really grown on me. I hope Spyderco is able to eventually re-release a cheaper (maybe FRN?) version at some point.

IIRC Spyderco also ships G-10 to Japan.
