Here's a couple of Bowies just before going into the quenchant. Blade is 1095/15n20, from my shop. OAL is 13"+, and BL is 8". The profile is from 100's of photos I've collected off of the forums. Then I found some things around the shop, like 8" abrasive cut-off disks, etc, and used that for the outline. Handle is mesquite, with brass guard and cap, and copper/red linen spacers. I'll try to come up with a good overall shot later on, but I had to get these in the mail fast, I was running behind and the customer wanted his knives. The sheaths were made by my friend Larry Crider here in Uvalde. Again, I'm sorry for the poor quaility of the pictures, and that's the #1 priority to do next, is learn how to take decent photographs (along with learning how to use my name etching machine.) Thanks for taking the time to look guys. I've been out of the loop for a few weeks because of some medical problems, and just now getting back into the swing of things. Haven't missed any of the forums posts though!

I'm confused(not unusual), do you heat treat after you put the handles on?

Whao!! great catch Mike! I should have said "etchant", and not "quenchant" :footinmou . Thanks for catching that error! :)

Robert,
I use mesquite quite a bit. Have you ever used any quayacon? It is GREEN and waxy.

Craig

Hi Craig. No I haven't, at least not for handles. I cut a large juayacon (I've seen both spellings) bush many years ago, and remember the color and feel of the wood. It started splitting pretty bad as I allowed it to cure, but I should have waxed the ends. I'm thinking that it would be beautiful on a knife!

HEy - Email me on what your having trouble on when your using the etching machine. I may be able to help. I had a big learning curve with my machine and stencils. It can be a pain. I built my own etching machine and had it wired up bassakwards but alls well now.....

Ok, thanks B! I have a Etch-O-matic, and I'm having trouble with both getting a deep etch, plus I just don't like holding the entire machine in my hand while etching. I'd rather hold a handpiece like the one on Bob Warners tutorial. I'm thinking about getting the cheaper version of the personalizer, then adding the $10 transformer to it, like one of you guys did in a post the other day. That way I have all the leads, switches, lights, handpiece, ect, ready to go. Still might build it from scratch though. does your etch deep? I'm also using the stencil making kit from Etch-o-matic, I don't know if it's rated very highly or not. The stencils I used on these knives were ones that another maker made and used. I re-used them after doing some touch-up to the blades.

Nice to have you back, Robert. Glad to hear you are okay. I was just thinking of you and those little donkeys the other day, and I was a wondering were you had run off to. I was thinking your business was so darn good you didn;t have any time to chitchat with us lowlifes any more! :D

R- build you one my man!! It cost me about 70 dollars. The only thing is I have a brass hand piece so I have to sand the corosion after etching. I just do this before I etch a new blade. It etches so deep that I left the etch without darkening it alot over the past few months. Someone emailed me wanting to know where I got my stamp made. Its that deep!

Higgy-miester, I'm still kicking, as of this morning anyway. I'm spending a lot of time getting ready for your visit in January. (No, not really, I think you're going to some ocean somewhere). I've been here everyday, just haven't been posting, but have been keeping up with everyone. Thanks for the "howdy".

Robert, Check out this rather long thread on simplifying knife photography in the Gallery forum:
http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=306402

Warning: there are lots of pictures in that thread which can lead to slow loading over dial-up, if that's your connection type.

There are also knife photography forums on KnifeNetwork.com which used to be Custom Knife Directory (CKD) and also on KnifeForums.com.
