I've been reading over several threads concerning 440V blade steel. I have learned that Spyderco has lowered the hardness to R55-56 from several points higher on earlier models. I want to buy either a Military or Starmate (eventually both). With the information I now have, I want to be sure that I buy a blade with the lower Rockwell hardness. How can I be sure the knife I buy is not one of the earlier models?

PTN,
I would probably have done the same, if I did not already have a number of Militaries...

ONE of my daily carries is a Military (CPM440V) with the grooves in the finger choil. It has not given me ANY reason for obtaining a new one (lower Rc, non-existing Rolling Lock, etc.)...

I suggest that you buy direct from SFO (contact Charlie - he'll be able to give you one of the newer ones)!

Ptn - It was a long time ago. We didn't make too many at the higher (57/58) Rc, but 57/58 wasn't bad, just not as good as 56/56.

Heyns,

You are lucky to have one of the older models. I really like my Military, but I wish I could get ahold of one of the older style models. I like the finger choil on the older ones.
Overall I am very pleased with this knifes performance thus far.
