Rockwell Hardness Tester?

Not much to add - SBuzek has said it all. I'll bet there are more of those HR-150A rockwell testers (from Grizzly and many other vendors) in use than the actual Wilson Rockwell tester. The diamond penetrator is very cheap to replace, around $10 from ebay sources (made in China of course).

If I had the $1,000 budget, I "think" I'd go with the HR-150 rather than the cheaper Sclerometer PHR-1. I just like reading Rc value from dial rather than the micrometer..... I think anyway.

It took me a while looking, but I found an hr-150 on Facebook marketplace for $200. Set up a search there and on Craigslist that will notify you when one goes up for sale. Just make sure you know what all parts should be with it, since most of them are pricey to replace.

I have the PHR-2 as shipping to my location with a full size machine broke my budget. I find it’s accurate, as long as you use it correctly.

Timely post for me. Don't mean to hijack the OP. I've been looking for a hardness tester. Not really wanting to drop $1k on one though. This is just a hobby for me. Came across these units. Seem pretty cheap. I'd really have no idea on how to evaluate a tester for proper operation.

Anyone have an opinion on these models?

Here's the link.

the grizzly comes with testing blocks and instructions.

If you can go look at the tester, at $100 (or $80?) that's a real steal, "IF" it's working. It sounds like it might work, but go test it.

I'd jump on one of those!!! Look up model numbers and make sure it reads in the C scale. Looks like the first one has no weights? But for the price weights can usually be bought on ebay reasonably. I paid $200 for a non working Wilson with no weights and it was fairly easy to get it working.

Thanks for the input. Never having used one of these, any tips or suggestions on how to operate or test these units before I buy? Where do the weights go?
