I can’t afford a robust Rockwell tester. I have files, but am thinking of returning them and getting chisels instead. Anyone have a preference and why?

Hardness Files wear down, Hardness Chisels get dull.

Hardness testers other than a diamond penetrator type are all sort of a guesswork by process of elimination. They are also subjective, and just give a range of possible hardness.

Save up and get a bench top hardness tester if you really need to know the hardness.

To be honest I think those tools are a gimmick to get your money. A flat file will tell you if the blade Hardened. Following a Known hardening Protocol/Recipe will generally get you the hardness claimed by the procedures. Nothing short of a Rockwell tester will give you EXACT hardness numbers. For centuries makers relied on procedures to get best result before a Rockwell Tester was invented. Follow procedure, save your money buy a True Rockwell Tester or find a local machine shop with a tester and buy 'em a Burrito to test a few knives or heat treat coupons.
