I have an HR-150A Rockwell tester. Basically an unbadged Grizzly.

Tonight I noticed when appling the main test force that the needle was moving much slower than normal and was kind of jumpy. I am going to try to adjust the oil needle tonight but I feel like there is some other maintenance thing I am missing.

How often are people adding machine oil to their testers? Also can anyone recommend a machine oil they use?

If I am missing anything please let me know. Any and all advise welcome. Thanks buddy

Thanks the oil needle adjustment fixed it, but I’m gonna oil up. Appreciate it

How much do you put in there? The manual says till it’s spilling over when the piston compresses. Seems excessive. Is that your experience?

It's fine yes, they do ask for No. 32 machine oil - I personally use 10w-30 SAE with additives (high milage synthetic, I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS). It works, it's just all about calibration.

FWIW, Outdoor Gear Dad Outdoor Gear Dad , yes, it is normal to soak the carpet of the 'dashpot' (what that thingy is called), I actually remove and clean the needle and fill said hole and then spill over everything but although these things are Chinese pos's - they do work if you properly calibrate it. That is more than just say, a NIST-certified block***. I personally check my indenter under 50x mag the indenter diamond and whatnot, granted most of the steels I deal with are well over 67Rc/900HV. Also, the manual is very key. If this thing is not PREFECTLY mounted, stable, proper surface finishes on the test pieces, it's going to skew the reading.

They ask for a 3.2-micron surface finish (N8) which - personally I think is a bit absurd but. Oil residues skews readings... You have yourself a SCIENTIFIC instrument after all.
Thanks for the info. It’s been a great machine that I have take care of and has always read right on with the certified blocks. Just want to make sure I am getting the most of it and maintaining it when needed.
