Im thinking about buying a rockwell hardness tester. Not the hand held type but I want the bench top USA made one that costs about $5000. Ok maybe the imported one for $695 in MSC ect. Has anyone had experiences with the import one or should I look for a good deal on the American made one.

Bruce,
Ray Rogers has the Grizzly version of the import in his shop tour section of his website.
You might drop him a line about it.
Regards, Greg

There were two at Boeing Surplus a few months ago for $400 each. Let me know if you want me to watch for one.

Phil Wilson wrote a good review of an import hardness tester in the December 1999 issue of KI. "I think overall the machine does what it is intended to do." "It is a great value"

There was one in a used tool store around here too, i will stop by there today to see if they still have it... i dont have room for it in my shop, thats for sure!:) EVERYTHING is on the bench...

Bruce, also have one of the imports, using it over a year now, it works fine, seems well made and I think its accurate. My only complaint is very minor, the wood box which holds the extras, its a little chintzy and seems out of place with the heavy construction of the tester.

Bruce there is nothing wrong with the imports you have the test blocks to set it up for the hardnes is rc or brinell there should be no sweat

Thanks guys, It sounds like the import will work fine for me. I remember that story Phil Wilson wrote now that you mention it. He says to compare it with a known good hardness tester. I think he has the USA one and his friend has the import. The two were only about 1 point different but had consistant results. Now who has the best price?
