I'm watching an industrial auction for work and often when I do this I peruse items I might want for myself. There's a Phoenix Dry Rod Model16A Type 300 Electrode Stabilizing Oven, 1000W 100-550 Degree F Temp Range, 120V, which from a quick google search seems to be an 18" long chamber.

I'm thinking about picking it up as a dedicated tempering oven, but I'm wondering if anyone else uses something similar for the same purpose. This size and temperature range would temper 99% of what I heat treat myself. It's $75.

I wish I had more experience to tell you if its a good idea or not but for $75 I'd be tempted to buy it and try it out if you don't have to pay a fortune for shipping. I also noticed the parts are pretty expensive so if you have a bad thermostat or heating element its going to set you back several hundred dollars to fix it.

That's the way I'm leaning I guess, since I'd be picking it up in person.

I don't see why it wouldn't work just fine. Can't be worse than a toaster oven that most of us use, and if fact is probably MUCH better.
Worst case scenario, you can get a cheap PID, a TC, and set it up for digital control if the currect t-stat isn't good enough. I'd jump on it.

Yep. Good points. I'll do it. I don't expect to see it get bid up anyway.

Sounds like worth a try.
If it wont work, you are all set to dry out your rods.
Btw, I made a holder & keep my rods along side my waterheater.

I don't go through enough rods to worry about it. They sit out in the open on my weld cart.

Don't know how you can go wrong as long as you can control the temp. Thinking you will probably want a PID to do that.

What kind of rods are you using? Many don't need as oven and for some it can be detrimental.

I won't be using it for rods. I only weld with 7018 and 6013 and I just use them however they sit in their box.

Might want to look into the oven. Depending on what your doing and for whom, those 7018 might need an oven. Ever try 7014?

No. That's not the point of this thread, or why I want a rod oven. If I'm welding something important it won't be at home with my farmer buzz box.
