im considering getting a rodent solution, it will be my first knife from the swamp so I have some questions for yall

i plan on edcing it in a horizontal kydex sheath on my belt in the small of my back. (I live in TEXAS so concealment isnt needed i just like carrying knives there)

what are yalls thoughts on this knife? pros? cons?

im considering it against an esee 3 so comparison pics or descriptions would be helpful

how thick is the handle of this knife?
what are the rivets made out of? has anyone ever removed them to paracord wrap the handle?

thanks in advance for the help yall, i really appreciate it.

Great knife, love mine and almost the perfect handle. I'll try to post pics tomorrow with some measurements. Highly recommend this model, great for cleaning animals. Holds an edge very well but attracts rust just sitting there thinking about rust. If you keep it oiled it has no issues. I am in Austin and if you are close enough I'll let you borrow mine for a week if you want to.

instead of drilling the tube fasteners out, these are lighter and less expensive

Ive had many rodent solutions and its an awesome knife and very nice for EDC

I've tried the ESEE 3 for EDC and it works well but the handles are't very big and its not a comfortable knife for hard work.

Overall I think the Rodent Solution is the superior knife. More comfortable handle and better steel that will hold an edge longer. Keep the handles on the knife. Paracord wrapped blades don't stay very well in the sheath and if you are carrying it on your belt you won't even notice the weight of the RS.

This is the only comparison pic I have. For processing that deer the RS and ESEE 3 went head to head and the RS was more comfortable and held its edge alot longer.

I have both knives and then some. Swamp Rat Rodent Solution, RMD (and other SRats) and the Esee 3 and 5 (and Izula). I bought three rodent solutions, giving two to my sons. They are great in the hand but the angle of the edges was quite acute and needs work. The Esees are not as good in the hand (as noted) but the blades are deeper and have a better angle. I put an Esee 3 and an RS in the kitchen for my wife to use. As a novice (she would rather use the Global kitchen knives) she would go to the Esee for cutting meat and veg; it was sharper and sliced through vegetables earlier.
As an aside, there are some great custom knife makers on this site and there prices can often be equal or close to what you will pay for a RS or Esee. Thoughts for future purchases.

i have considered both of those but the scrapivore is a little small for me (i have large hands) and i have read several places that the scrapivore is uncomfortable to hold due to the "pry bar" end of the handle. the swamp warden however i love and would love to have one but im having a hard time finding one on the exchange

so your saying the edge of the knife is to thick and doesnt slice well?

and i have looked into custom knife makers but im having a hard time finding what i want at the right price. plus owning a busse kin knife is one of those things i have wanted to do for a while

thanks for the info, very helpful.
and i cant think of any other kind of pic i would rather see than a nice bloody pic of them in use

thanks i would love some more pics to look at

the rust concerns me a little since i live on the coast, have you had problems with it rusting any where other than the exposed sharpened edge

and i would absolutely love to barrow it, ill send you a PM

Hello again, I appreciate all that you have said. I have a few Busse, more Swamp Rats, some esee, falkniven and a few customs. On the rodent solutions that I bought, the edge was a little thick (especially towards the tip). A great knife and I don't regret the purchase; I have bought a couple of RMDs since the RS. Just be prepared to perhaps put some work into the tip (if it is anything like mine). They are a great knife for the price and I am sure SR will have more of my money soon.

Ill add some more observations from my use of both!

Ive had probably 6 or 7 rodent solutions and about 4 ESEE 3's and Ive EDC'd both and used both in the field.

The RS is much more comfortable to use. The handle just fits the hand better and I think most people will tell you this.

The ESEE3 has better edge geometry, is thinner, and will slice better. If your task is cutting and apple, the ESEE3 will perform better than the rodent solution.

Not that toughness is super important for an EDC but the RS is a STOUT little knife. My brother has used one for about a year and a half as his go to work knife for heating and air + repair work for rental properties. He's beat the thing to hell and it keeps on ticking. Its a knife you can pry with, hammer on, and just generally abuse. And this is not to say the ESEE 3 isn't tough but it has a much finer tip, is thinner and taller overall and 1095 is not as tough as SR 101. I know I could break my ESEE 3 with a little bit of effort. I don't know that I could break a RS short of doing anything really stupid. SR 101 is a better steel than Rowen/ ESEE 1095. Its harder, tougher, and holds its edge noticeably longer than 1095. Keep that in mind.

In terms of non slicing cutting performance I think the RS is the better knife mainly due to the comfort of the handle. If you want to make a feather stick, cut drywall, cut through thick cardboard etc... the RS will be a much better knife for the task. You'll be able to generate more cutting power due to the leverage you can get from the handle.

I tend to EDC a folder now but I used to EDC the ESEE 3 over my RS only because of the comfort of pocket carry. The 3 has a slimmer profile that makes it more pocket friendly. If I were carrying on a belt I would pick the Solution almost every time.

One last thing to add- Ive had many rodent solutions and most of them have had awful edges out of the box. I mean bad. The satin ones are much better than the coated ones for initial edge geometry and sharpness.

If you want the best of both worlds get a hollow ground satin RS. It will slice well and have better edge holding than the ESEE 3.

Either way both knives will do the Job for EDC and do it well and both come from companies that stand behind their product and make their knives in the USA. You cant go wrong with either.

Thank you everyone for the helpful responses, based on the fact that it will almost always be paired with a folder for edc so i will have that folder for any task requiring a thin slicing blade i think I'm going to get the rodent solution. Also I have been wanting a Busse kin knife for quite some time.

I think that is a great solution! I am in the same position as you. I came up with the same solution as you did also . Now I just need to find a Rodent Solution to go along with my EDC folder (George VECP). I don't have any Busse family knives yet. I figured the Rodent Solution is as good a place to start as any.

I edc a RS in a custom horizontal leather sheath and i love it! It is a awesome blade and feels perfect in the hand! You will have no regrets with this purchase!

I guess that Swamp Rat is taking orders for the Rodent Solution? I sent them an email a couple days ago but haven't gotten a reply back yet.
