About 3 months ago and previously shown in BF I acquired, from a dealer, a knife by Swedish maker Andre Andersson, called the Fishtail Fighter. It was to be displayed alongside another Swedish maker's, Ingemar Nordell, knife which had been obtained from Julie of AZCK.

Looking for more info about the fighter, I emailed Andre and also mentioned that I had one more maker that I wanted to get a piece from to fill out the nice triumverate of Swedish made knives. I mentioned I had been looking at various pieces by Roger Bergh.

One dealer I contacted via email never returned the message in a year and a half, I missed out to another dealer in an attempt to get one on EBay and generally had not found just what I wanted at the appropriate price.

Andre passed on the info (unbeknownst to me) to Roger and I received a nice email from Roger suggesting that he might have something soon available which might suit my needs. Wow! what could be better. He asked me to give him an idea of the style of knife and features and price range. I pointed him to some of his work I have seen on the net and a couple weeks later, I received an email with great photos of something that Roger thought I might like.

I did!! Off went a cheque and in 2 weeks a package arrived with a wonderful example of the great knives produced by Roger Bergh.

The knife fits the hand well and is sleek. OAL is 8 1/2" with a 3 1/2" blade of 180 layer pine and explossion damascus. The grinds as can be seen are crisp and definitive. I love multi grind blades with great bevels showing lots of shape to the blade. This one is superb.

Before we look at the handle which is just exquisite, one is first overwhelmed with the total package as the knife sits in the sheath.

This sheath is fully tooled and shaped with an elegance that is typical of the construction of fine knives and sheaths coming from Sweden. The softness of the leather is fully accented by the subtle play of light on it, creating rich, warm browns and reds.

Once one gets to the handle, the artistic elegance of the knife really shines. The whole handle is a carved combination of Mammoth ivory, slabs and a slice, stabilized birch burl and a spacer with built in, integral thong hole made of "sunk oak" with 3 accents of nickel silver spacers.

note the curves, undulations and roughened area of the burl. Each area provides a terrific tactile sensation when holding the knife.

As one progresses along the handle to the rear and the thonghole, one is pleased to find more curves and swells and indentations in the carving and a beautiful pattern in the "sunk oak" is visible.

All-in-all, this whole package is just a real delight to sit and hold and caress. To be sure it is something special.

That is beautiful! I love the fire edge, ivory, and birch. Bergh is one of my favorite makers. Thanks for the pics.

That's an incredible knife package there, Murray, and your description made it even more appealing. The conversations with Roger and the subsequent purchase are a feel-good decision. That's the half of it.

Even the edging on the leather thong is tasteful. WOW!!!! Thanks for sharing your talents and collection.

I wonder if it was noticed that the work at the top of the sheath is matched to the work on the lower part of the handle.

Coop it is always nice to be able to post about knives and I'm glad that other collectors can enjoy them with me.

Oh, BTW--finally had to go with Fototime. I'm saving files differently from before so some of the new images may appear better than others as the file size is bigger. I might figure this stuff out yet lol.

Wow, thats truly a wonderful knife! Everything just goes together...great work!

Terrific knife Murray -I know you've been searching for one of his for some time. Lots of tremendous detail in this piece. And I really like the way these Nordic-type sheaths tend to be barely larger than the knife they contain. Very space-efficient design as well as very attractive.

Cheers,

Roger

Very impressive knife! Lots and lots of time went into that one, I'm sure.
