Can anyone give me a little history on this knifemaker? I've seen his pieces show up from time to time on the net, but when I run a search here, I don't find any info on him or his work.

Thanks in advance,
Will

Don't know much about this maker other than he specializes in 19th century period pieces. I have seen a few of his Sheffield Bowies and they great looking knives. He used to have a web site, but it looks like he no longer does.

I think he retired a few years back. He studied under D.E. Henry and soon became the man to carry on his legacy. He was well know for his super clean work, especially in his traditional style bowies.

Roger is a fine fellow , I have seen several of his knives and have met him a couple of times eventhough I only live about 35 miles from him I have not been to his shop but know he makes a fine Knife and they are not cheap , Tank

Keith & Bobby-

Thanks a million for that response. Bobby, I don't know who D. E. Henry was. My exposure to knife history has been limited to what I've picked up off the net the past couple years, and that name isn't known to me. Any additional light you could shed really would be appreciated.

Tank-

Thank you, also, for that input. I had no idea Green lived in Texas. I've seen a piece of his which had been engraved by Simon Lytton in England, and wondered if he might be English. Thanks for clearing that up. Do you know if he is retired?

Thanks again,
Will

D. E. Henry is a fairly legendary maker of custom bowies, esp. traditional style. There are several pics of his knives in some of Weyer's "P{oint of Interest" books, and they do look nice indeed. I seem to recall that he had a very bad reputation as far as arrogance & abusive language go, but I might be mistaken.

Not so much arrogant, and abusive, but rather abrupt and abrasive based on what I've read. He seemed to stumble on to the hot button issues quite a bit. Some of the few I remember were the "Steel selection", and "forged vs stock removal debate". When you read his stuff, weather you agreed or not, you had had to say it was well thought out. His knives when in different series, if I recall, based on historical models, and the Abels collection. With each series, the lines, porportions, etc... got a bit crisper, etc... I believe there were 5 series in all. If you can get to a good magazine collection, he was covered quite a bit in the early 90s.

There was an issue of Blade about 10 yrs back, where Moran, Loveless, & Henry name the top makers in their repective styles. On the top of Henry's list was Roger Green, and a few Japanese makers.

Green's stuff is really nice, I think he'd rate up there with any maker. I believe Fighting Knives gave him the most coverage over the years. :D:).

Thanks JD and Bob for that input. Does anyone know for sure if Roger Green is still active, or if he has retired? Does anyone have contact information for him?

Tank--you seem to be the only one who's posted here, who has kept track of him lately?

Thanks again,
Will

DE Henry is a legend among the pioneer makers and lifted fit and finish to a new level. If you have the chance to look through some of the old Knives Annuals or early editions of Gun Digest Books of Knives there were many articles about him.
He did have a reputation for having no patience with people and was generally not known as a nice person to be around. As I recall Roger Green was his prized pupil and one of the few who could stand to be around him.
The pieces I've seen of Greens are about flawless, and as stated very pricey.I'm pretty sure he retired but AG Russell often has some of his knives.

Alright, I dug up the issues:
1) Blade april 94-

Moran liked: Hanford Miller, Hendrickson, Ray Kremzer, Mike Rochford, Jim Rhodes, Mark Snetz, Aubrey Barnes, Kent Nicholson.

Henry- Green, Bob Hayes, Eigi KIkkawa, and Pakeo Fukui.

Loveless- Cordova, Aida, George Lee Sye, Shiro Furukawa, Herman Schneider, Steve Johnson, & Herron.

Herron- Jack Barrett, Ron Little, DeFreest, James Poplin, Dave Howe, Rich Bridwell, Mark Roper, Ed Love, Wayne Hendrick, Cliton Manley, Hal Gainly, Bobby Branton, Rade Hawkins, Wayne Hensley, JImmy/Gerald Davis, Dick Gillenwater.
This issue also had Henry Bitchin' about stuff:).

Blade April 92: Maker Profile- Roger Green, and Henry. :D:).

I am pretty sure Roger is retired; at least for the time being. Working as a machinist I think. Rogers work is pretty much flawless. His fit, finish and lines were impeccable, in many opinions. D.E. Henry did not seem to be rude the time I met him. I think he did not suffer fools or their questions lightly; so I caught a break there. m

Thanks. You know, it's interesting and kinda scarry that very, very few of those are household names nowadays...

Henry made app. 462 pieces. Massey has made less than 100. Henry stock removed...Massey forges. If a knife has Henry or Massey on it, it will be SUPER CLEAN. PERIOD! IMO, they both will be HIGHLY sought after in the future. IOW, more than now.

Bob-

Any chance of talking you into sending me photocopies of those two articles? I'd gladly pay postage and a fee for your time and trouble.

You can email me at strongyork@aol.com

Thanks again to all,
Will

AG Russell does have some Greens on hand. They are a bargin too. Rogers pieces have dropped in resale here lately. I picked up an exceptional piece. AG did have a pearl handled bowie, with McKenzie engraving on it and the sheath for less than $1000 last week. Not sure about now.

Bob Bowie (Steve)--

Thanks a million for the info by snail mail. I really appreciated that. Would have contacted you by email to say thanks, but my copy of your email address has dropped off my saved list.

Best to you,
Will

Hi Will,

Glad to be of service:). I would have gotten it out to you sooner , but I had a bit of medical stuff I had to deal with, and well, it slipped my mind:).

Also, the maker you asked about is Joe Cordova:).
