Just an update for you Roger.

The surplus 2hp DC motor and that controller run great together.

Just wired it up last night. I mounted the controller board and all the switches inside a PC power supply case, fit just fine. Wow is this gonna be great. My grinder isn't here yet :grumpy: so I can't attest to the power, but using friction I couldn't slow it down even at slow speed.

RE the open motor: Bruce Evans has one he's been using for 3 years. Sure, a closed motor would be better, but if HE can get by with it I'm sure I can.

BTW before you buy your AC motor and pulleys here's what I think are the advantages:

Complete smooth speed control from 0-3600

Double shaft motor means I can mount a buffer wheel or disc on the other side and have a variable speed 2hp buffer

and the one thing I really wanted --- reversable

Total package price? $230

Oh yeah, one other thing I'm probably going to do. Now that I have the controller, and the motors are only $40, I'll probably get another motor for a horizontal sanding disk.

Hope that information helps your decision process.

OK! OK!...I'm going as fast as I can (hee hee).

Your custom grinder is just about finished. All the special parts were finished this morning....now to assemble, test, crate and ship.

I love my job!:)

Take care, Rob

Rob,

You love your job?:) Heck I love your job :D :D :D !

And you're right - I'm like a kid waiting for Christmas.

Steve

PS I think I need some more goodies from you too.

If you are getting anythinig from Rob,I am sure you will be very happy with your purchase. And if it is a KMG you will be in grinder heaven.;)

I've been Eyeballing the KMG-1 for some time now but have been holding off trying to find a way to afford a VS motor. Please keep us informed as to how well this setup works.

Steve,

Now you got me re-thinking all this motor stuff. I went to your controller site and looked up my nearest distributer. Guess what - there's one right here in town. I could walk to it. They're closed for the evening so got to wait til tomorrow.

I see two motors on that page. One is a robot motor and the other is a tread-mill motor. I guess your using the later.

How are you planning to link the motor to the grinder? A belt or direct?

If your getting an extra motor for backup why don't you just make the controller portable. That way you can have a buffer and a grinder without having the grinder in your way while buffing.

You are selling me on this. I'd like to know how you intend to link up to the grinder.

Thanks;

Roger

Roger,

I'm getting a KMG-1 grinder from Rob and I told him the characteristics of the motor (about 3600 rpm @ 90vdc). He suggested starting out with a 1:1 ratio on the belt pulleys. Then once I decide on my favorite speeds I might want to change the ratio. For example if I don't use the high speed, but more slower I would increase the size of the pulley on the grinder.

RE Portable controller.

That's pretty much what I was going to do. Actually, I was going to mount the controller and then have a plug for the motor hookup. Then simply plug in the motor I want to use. One controller, one guy, lots of toys.

Matlock: Rob is shipping my new toy today or tomorrow, so I can give a report in a week or so.
