I went searching for this review and couldn't find it, so I assume it got obliterated in the crash. Since there are precious-few pics of Roger's knives floating around, I thought I'd re-post it:
Here's a recent offering from a heck of a talented bladesmith by the name of Roger Massey. I first met Roger at the 2003 Little Rock show and was fortunate enough to pick up one of his excellent bowies. I couldn't make it to Little Rock this year, but my partner in crime - Danbo - was good enough to do some shopping on my behalf.
I am most grateful to Roger and Danbo for the fruits of that enterprise - a massive crown stag bowie in the finest Massey tradition:
This knife sports a blade of forged 1084 carbon steel that is a shade over 10" in length. Overall length to the end of the beefy stag handle is 16". One thing about a big carbon steel blade like this - there's plenty of opportunity to see any flaw in the grinds or finish. Except this is a Massey, so there aren't any. The hand-rubbed satin finish is just as slick as you could hope for.
The nicely turned out S-guard is of nickel silver, as is the engraved ferrule - just the second knife that Roger has engraved.
The big stag handle provides a comfortable and secure grip. Overall, the feel of the knife really finds the sweet spot in presenting both a powerful feeling of mass and a reassuring feeling of balance.
Big stag bowies always make me smile .
