Many of you will remember this piece that I made for Roger a year or so ago, and it was photographed by Buddy Thomason.Since this piece was made it has been published FOUR times, hence the thread title:D!!
The first time was on the month of January of this year's CKCA calendar. It then was featured in Knives 2012, the flier that Krause Publications sends out to advertise the Annual, and now the Jan.2012 issue of Blade Magazine!
I feel that this is a nice knife and sheath combo, and I am quite proud of it, but I have certainly made fancier and more complex pieces than this, so why was this one published so many times?I believe it can be directly attributed to the wonderful talent of Buddy and his very tasteful photograph of this piece!
We as maker's like to have our work noticed and recognized by our peers , fellow makers, and collectors, and the best way to do this is through quality photos, whether it be by those that have the skills to do it themselves, or through the hard work and efforts of guys like Coop,Buddy, Chuck Ward,Eric Eggly, just to name a few(There are many more!)Thanks guys for all you do to promote our work, and thank you to Roger and all the other collectors that by purchasing our work allows us to do what we love to do!!!!Thanks also to the CKCA and Krause Publications/Blade Magazine for the press!

John -- Bravo bravissimo...not only for a great knife and sheath...not only for the swell photo...not only for the great press...but most especially for your bringing Thanksgiving to us early. Gratitude is one of the best antidotes to the often grievous times we live in, as it is one of the sweetest and sincerest versions of levity. Mahalo my friend and congrats! -- Phil

congrats John and Roger This go's to show what a strong place this style of work has in the knife world and also how John's work is seen as some of the best in the style.

Hi there John-

That's lots of publicity there! I happened to notice that one of my knives was in this same Knives 2012 flyer, too - so here is a decent-sized image of what was sent out to all Blade Mag subscribers, etc, advertising Knives 2012*. Wow, some super knives in this year's Annual, too! Great knife of yours (and Roger's!).

I've been fortunate to have had a few knves published over the years, but this one sets a record for sure! I'm very happy for you John, and quite tickled myself. As you say, it goes to show what a good photo (of very good work) can do. A maker can make a watershed piece, but if he ships it off to the buyer who then installs it securely in his safe, only two people get to see it and the marketing value of the piece is lost.

Roger

PS - here's the full-size pic:

Thanks Guys!Bob, thank you for the pic of the flier. For some reason I did not get one:mad:, so this is my first time seeing it.If anyone got one in the mail and does'nt want it, I would gladly return your postage if you would mail it to me:D!Thanks also Roger for the full size photo.I thought I had that size on file.Guess I do now:thumbup:!

John & Roger - I was pleased for you guys that Joe Kertzman chose that photo for Knives 2012 and for the flyer that was mass-mailed. There's quite a lag time between the maker's finishing a knife and its appearance in the Knives Annual but that does not diminish the power of the image to stir potential customers to action. If the photo helps bring more customers to your door, John, and helps sustain or increase the value of your investment, Roger, then we will have succeeded. Apparently the publisher thought it would help sell the Knives 2012 Annual too. That's encouraging.

^^^ A powerful image. A powerful statement.

I concur! :D

Beautiful knife and sheath, engaging context imagery, so much talent on so many levels--not to mention the refined taste of the owner. That it has been published so many times is impressive, and a reminder to me of how the internet and sites like these have expanded that circulation by orders of magnitude. Wonderful that there are enough platforms to nurture the specialty photographers of today who concentrate on knives--a far cry from the days when knife magazines were the only major outlet for beautiful images of blades. Thanks to all who make this work.

Thanks a lot everyone!Terry, you never had a shot at this one, since it was made on order per Roger's specs.I can however make you one similar:D!

John, I would send you the mailer I have, except that, as mentioned, one of my own knives also appears published in the same bunch of articles. Hope you find one of those mailers for yourself!

Best,

Bob

Thanks Bob.My friend Chad Nichols has one for me:thumbup:,and I also emailed Joe Kertzman and he is going to send me some.I told him I could pass them out to family, friends, and customers and convince them to buy the book:D!!

no honest photographer can do much to make a poorly designed knife look good.
Buddy did a great job in making this knife shine.
combination of great design, well executed and accompanied by an emotive photo can't be beat.

my question for you, John, is why isn't this photo your avatar? I think it should be.

Hats off to you Buddy - this shot really captures the personality of the piece.

Roger
