This is an example of the "Spring Heeled Jack" by French knife maker Roland Lannier. I've been a fan of his work for the past two or so years, when I found out that he designed the Perceval L-08 model that I had received as a gift from my wife. He worked for Perceval for a number of years before starting his own shop in Thiers, France. He has two apprentices and himself, and his work focuses on culinary knives, both fixed and folding. What makes Roland unique is that he wants to "shake up" traditional knife making by getting away from traditional materials like wood, bone, horn, etc. and use more modern and inorganic materials that represent the culture of his own generation--things like tartan cloth from the "punk" movement, or vinyl records, or comic books, or even (gasp!) concrete!
Whether you agree with Roland's philosophy, you cannot dispute his creativity and attention to detail. His craftsmanship is first-rate and he was a pleasure to work with in getting the custom work made, which you see in the pictures above.
This may sound like an advertisement, but really I just have such great pleasure in the knives and craftsmanship that I want more folks to know about him and enjoy what he makes.
