Rolled 1095 ON PLASTIC?

I slashed a relatively thick platic orange juice jug three times this morning with my Junglas and it went through with ease all three times. The only problem is the 3/4-inch roll that developed near the tip of the blade. :barf: I know for sure that the only thing the blade has ever cut was paper and plastic bottles, but I didn't think anything like that could possibly roll the edge that badly. Has anyone had this or something similar happen to them before?

If the edge rolled:

It's too thin.....

or

Too soft...

or

Both.

Right; so in summary, the edge angle is either too thin, the steel is too soft, (basically these 2 are interrelated, since the harder the steel, the narrower the edge it can support without rolling...although it may then chip instead) or you had a burr or wire edge.

Just steepen the edge angle and try again. I have had this happen every time I take the edge too thin for a certain steel to take, I wouldnt worry about a poor HT unless it happens again with the adjusted angle. If it IS a burr try stropping it and see if the roll goes away, if it does it was likely a burr as said above.

I had this happen to me a couple of weeks ago.

Rolled the edge of a 1095 pen blade trimming the stem of a cob I had chewed through.

I figure the edge was too fine for what I was cutting.... was still a bit suprised though.

It sharpened out no problem.

If I had experienced what you did, heres what i would do:

Dig a hole with the knife, and then sharpen out all the dings, chips and rolls.

Most nuts maybe would do something like this, I like to think of it as preventative damage.

If your sharpening is sound, I'd go with the wire edge. Strop it on some slurry and see if it disappears. DM
