Hi guys,

I put this up on the Boker forum a couple days ago, in an existing thread. It’s kinda quiet over there at the moment though, and I thought this might be of wider interest.

I got my first Boker Subcom folder, the all-black model with the combo-edge, a few weeks ago. It was actually a birthday present from my girlfriend, and we were away on holiday for a week or so before that in the Scottish Highlands, so I didn’t get a chance to have a play with it until after we got back. I really like the design and will probably buy others, as well as the larger Trance. I haven’t really done anything with the Subcom apart from opening a couple of packages, but looking at the edge under a magnifying glass the other day I noticed that the edge near the tip is rolled over. I don’t think I’ve damaged it in any way, I think the damage was probably either done at the warehouse or factory. It’s nothing I can’t sort out, and in fact the good people at Heinnie Haynes have told me to send it back (despite it being outside their already generous 16 day warranty.) I just wondered if anyone else had had any problems, either with these knives or with any others.

Jack

No probs with my Trance. This happens. Don't sweat it. Boker will cover you.

Oh absolutely no worries Lycosa, I'll certainly be buying more :)

I've used my Subcom so much I've resharpened it twice. If it had suffered any damage like that along the way, I'd have sharpened it away by now without noticing. It is a very thin blade, one of its good points.

I think it's part of the fun to be so careful with our knives. I always put new blades under magnification, and I magnify a new edge when I sharpen, but I don't need to to. I can feel when it's sharp. :)

Jack---Did you fix the roll? How?

I was going to try and fix it myself, though that would have meant losing quite a bit of the point. However I contacted the retailer, Heinnie Haynes, about it, and they asked me to return it, Hopefully they'll exchange it rather than re-grinding it. From the look of it, I'd say that it maybe fell point first onto a very hard surface. As Esav has said, it is a thin blade, but everyone seems to have nothing but praise for these knives and I doubt they're easily damaged. I'm really surprised I didn't notice it sooner really, though the pic I've posted perhaps makes it look a bit more obvious than it actually is (there are another couple of pics on the Subcom sticky in the Boker forum.) Out of interest does anyone know what the RC is on the Subcom?

Jack black---You'll be good as new!. A Maker told me most of the knives he had to resharpen were from the knife being dropped. Keep that in mind!

Oh I'm very careful with knives Lycosa, they're too sharp not to be careful with! :)

Now, when I hand a blade over, for someone to look at, I say Please--don't drop it!! I'll actually sit at a table or go to a counter. I got it bad!

I'm cringing just thinking about it!

It's true, though. We have had many threads over the years about What Happens when we hand over our knives to people who do not know how to treat them. Some of these involve damage to the knives, many involve damage to the people. Very sad.

:p

hey Jack Black (great name btw),
methinks the point on your SubcomF was accidentally damaged/mishandled  en route to your doorstep?
I've got maybe 10 SubcomF (or variants like Wharcom, Subclaw), 2-3 Trances all with consistently sharp edges and "intact" points.
with the 2mm thick blades on the SubcomF, and full flat grinds, it's quite easy to blunt/damage the tip if it accidentally dropped on to the floor, for example...
I've got no clue how hard the Aus8 steel is ....i've seen variable Rc ratings from 57-59 for Aus8
either way it should'nt take too long to reprofile it ;)

Maybe it was accidentally dropped at the retail warehouse or somewhere else en route? If that's the case it must have been onto something pretty hard, but at least it didn't chip or break off :) Guess I was just unlucky with my first SubcomF, but I think it's a great little knife, and I'm keen to get a few more and also some of the others.

yeah Jack, it's gotta be a fluke; strop it on some "glossy-paper" rolled up magazine as per this thread;it should restore the edge in no time ;)

Ha! I just read that a second ago! 'Fraid my Subcom's gone back in the post today. I'm missing it already and hope it comes back safe and sound, and in time for a trip I'm making next week. I'll be trying the glossy paper strop on a few other knives! :)

Jack, it looks like the damage is minimal to me. I would just fix it and move on. No big deal.

It certainly hasn't put me off buying other Subcom's Smitty. Nor from buying them from Heinnie Haynes, who I think are an excellent retailer. While I'm sure it wasn't done intentionally though, I don't think it's acceptable for a new knife to be sold in that condition, with the edge rolled over like that (what you can see in the pic is the shadow from the rolled edge), and I'm pleased that Heinnie Haynes agree with me.
