Rolled edge on M4 Presidio, should I be disappointed?

I will get pictures tonight or tomorrow, but I significantly rolled the edge on my M4 presidio. It feels like a huge burr when running my finger on it, and it easily catches my fingernail. I had recently reprofiled the edge to a 30 degree inclusive, which may have been a little too thin for what I used it for. I'm not sure if I should actually be disappointed because this happened when I used it to cut open a steel ammo tin. The can opener it came with broke about 3/4 of the way through, so I finished up with the presidio.

The M4 presidio used BM's old heat treat at 59-61. Do you think their newer M4 at 62-64 and a steeper angle would do better?

The tin looked like this:

Personally, I wouldn't run a workhorse knife at 30 inclusive... I've got my 154 CM Presidio at 40-45. M4 is a different beast though.

The most recent use my 520 had was field stripping and re-assembling the bolt on my Savage rifle that wasn't ejecting properly. Chipped the heck out of the bevel, but 154 CM is WAY easier to resharpen than M4. Wrong tool for the job? Maybe. ...But just like your situation, it was all I had :)

Yeah, I didn't have opening a steel can in mind when I sharpened it. However I was at the range and it was all I had. Did some damage to the cerakote too, which I don't mind one bit as I love the look of beat up knives.

"Toughness" is the ability of a steel to deform, rather than fracture-- you should be tickled, as the alternative would be chipping. M4 is tough stuff. 59-61 is tougher than 62-64. I've gotten into this discussion many times w/ folks who figure the higher the hardness the better, as they fail to recognize that there is a tradeoff.

Well put!

I have my CPM-M4 grip beveled lower than the thumbstuds and I use it hard. The edge has rolled against concrete a few times. CPM-M4 is SO EASY to sharpen and rolls are so much better than chips. To have such a hard steel at 62-64 and have it just roll against rocks and concrete is very cool.
