Some have asked for the story I referred to in another thread. A "Nic Ramirez" posted it on the Swamprat RATCHAT Forum in January, 2004.

I submit it for your perusal:

"First I want to say that I just got a email from Eric and he said they got the Camp Tramp,Eric if you would like to post pictures of that bad boy that would be cool.

How the CT saved our butts,

Me and a very good friend were 4x4 ing up in the hills about 25 miles from any house or town,My buddy saw this very STEEP hill and decided he wanted to try going up we made it about 3/4 of the way up when we started to go side ways anyone who has been off roading knows that when you go sideways on a very steep hill etc it means OH CHIT moment,Luckily my buddy got it somewhat under control.

He tried backing down when all of a suddon he lost control and we went side over side and front over back about 12-15 timesThe cab held up pretty good but at the final roll it crushed and we had no real room to move...(thank god for seat belts)My head was ringing and I was very dizzy,it had taken me about 15 minutes I guess to try and get my head straight.

We tried the cell phones but of course no reception,my buddy was bleeding from the nose and had a big lump on his head and so did I,The sun started to fall and it was getting cold in that canyon, nobody was expecting us until the next day.
We started yelling for help and then yelling at each other LOL,We both kept saying "How in the hell are we going to get out of here".
Then I remember I had the CT,I didnt have much room to work with,I dug up a rock that was underneath me and used that rock to pound the CT into the door,I did this until I had half of a square but realized it was taking to damn long.....P.S CMG Ultra infinty was priceless,.......What I did next was stab through the roof and cut a large piece away so that I could dig a hole,as I did this I would pass the dirt to my friend and he would push it out a small opening.

All this time he kept saying...."That knife is going to brake Ryan"..What does he know,is what I thought. As I dug a hole I ran into the "ig rocks"that we all love so much.Lucky for me I had enough room now to move around and get some quicker work done on that door. Now things were looking better, and the CT went to work, with the room I had I could now use a good chopping motion and it was much quicker,I would chop and bend the metal back to give the blade more room so it wouldnt get stuck,I think this is where the chipping started is when I would chop down and then try and bend the metal, this is bad on some knives in wood but here I was doing it to a door of a vehicle
"

The picture of the knife does not come up on the original old thread, but from what I gathered, edge damage was fairly minimal, all things considered. If you want to see pictures of the knife, perhaps Eric at the Swamp can find it for you.

The point of the story as _I_ see it is: In a survival situation, you don't always have the luxury of choosing which task you'll require your knife to perform.

It was Featherstone who posted that story. He has been known to stretch the truth some times.

I have lurked on and off at Jeff Randal's forum since day one. Featherstone once posted there that this urban legend actually happened to him.

Featherstone,, if your reading this, no offence meant man. I like some of your stories as much as the next guy. :D

Don't go four wheelin' by yourself with a moron buddy and you can take any knife you want is the moral of that "story."

Self-recovery is way too advanced a skill for total tools to rely upon.

Here is the link to the original thread as it appeared at Swamprat:

His name there was "Nic Ramirez" Turns out he reappeared as "Featherstone45ACP" later in that thread, so it apparently is the same guy to whom you refer.

It doesn't matter if you believe the story or not.

MY point remains unchanged: In a survival situation, you don't always get to choose what task you'll require your knife to perform.

In extreme cases you made need to use your knife for something you may not have intended, such as scaling a cliff or cutting through a car.
However, I doubt it was worth getting into a debate over with MainEdge to prove this point. It was a pretty innocent statement that you misunderstood and ran with. He basically said he wouldnt use his knife past it's assumed breaking point, not that he knows what to expect in a survival situation. If I had a sak I wouldn't try to use it to cut through the roof of my jeep, or else I would have a broken sak and be stuck in a jeep.

I noticed you are one of the noss haters over in knife reviews and testing. Your little "debate" makes more sense now, as does your lack of comprehension.

Liam,

Really, dude, get someone to read to you. You're just not getting it.

My point was and is, "in a survival situation, you don't always get to choose what you'll require your knife to do." To think otherwise is simply foolish.

If you KNOW you'd break your knife doing something, then don't do it. Then again, you might have to TRY it before you find out you passed the breaking point.

As for Noss, I couldn't care less either way. You must be "Freddy Kruger" in some of those videos, which would explain why you are taking it sooooooooo personally.

if you couldnt care either way about noss you wouldnt make yourself look like a jerk by needlessly flaming him.
