Got an old homemade grinder with 8 inch contact. But it has roller bearings for 1/2 inch shaft. Just doesnt make sense to be. If tighten the bolt up it compresses on the bearing and wheel itself, binding amd friction. If I leave loose, the belt tension can ride the wheel out against washers and doesnt seem using the bearings to advantage. I see most contacts now with standard bearings that have inner race to tighten shaft up to. What am i missing? It was manu this way. Thx. Tried link pic but failed.

Yes, ideally you would have a hollow tube that your hardware would go through....and when tight, it would tighten on Only the inner race of the bearing squeezing against that inside hollow tube.

That way your bearing wouldn't be strained.

Good wheel assemblies are made that way.

*I also have a "bad" one for one of my wheels that I didn't fix, yet

You either have to figure out a way to add a inner sleeve, or just keep it not super tight. Maybe add a locknut and some loctite?
