Well, there is no way to ask about everyone's balls, without a few giggles from some, and perhaps some offense from others. I'll try my best not to degrade this forum with lude humour! ;)

Anyways.....all kidding aside, I noticed that the balls in my early model umnumzaan and my recent model 25 behave very differently. The detent ball on my Umnumzaan actually rolls along the blade. The ball is not loose in it's socket, but does roll around in there. As you open the blade the ball starts rolling along it's track. On my 25 the ball is basically fixed and does not move at all. This actually makes the 25's action much smoother as the ceramic ball sliding along the steel creates less jitter than the ball of my Umnum rolling along the blade.

Looking at the Umnum apart, it does seem like the ball was intended to turn as there is not as much "pinch" in the ti lock-face socket as there is on my 25 (which of course also has a larger ball). I am left to wonder if my Umnum has a design feature that was later abandoned, or if it's just unusual in having a rolling ball. The best way to observe this action is too put some fresh white grease on the ceramic ball. If the ball rolls you will see the grease spin around.

Does anyones else have free-rolling balls?........man that sounds wrong! :culpability:

Ok, you know I love you brother!! But I am beginning to think you have way to much time on your hands!!:D Really rolling balls as opposed to non-rolling balls!! Your killing me Cody!! You are way to scientific for me!! But I am very interested in your discovery of the rolling ball!! As we know the Umunmzaan was and still is a complete departure from previous designs that have come out of CRK! And in my opinion, as I have stated in earlier posts the pinnacle of CRK design in a large folding knife!! (yes I know fooj the Mnandi) Until the introduction of the Sebenza 25 in 2012!! So, knowing that your Umnumzaan is one of the first production models with a birth card date of October 16 2008 is it possible or even probable that the "new" ceramic ball system has evolved in the last five plus years? Probably so!! But although I have almost every variation of the Umnumzaan (just completed the purchase of another) in my meager collection I don't have any white grease!! ;) Not knowing I would wager that the current production model has non-rolling balls. But we will only find out when others start to chime in on another of your awesome threads!!
And as always,
All the best, Dave
P.S. Don't forget that he Prototypes had two balls!!

Well....that's the strength of a community.....everyone brings their special something to the table. If my part is to notice the minute things otherwise missed, I hope it is welcome on the forum. Maybe I am over-thinking my CRKs' but I clearly can't help myself. This rolling balls question is gonna keep me up all night! :D

This came up a short while ago and it seems some detents do move and some don't. I have 3 Umnumzaans just now, all from 2009, and none of their ceramic, spherical detents rotate in the housing. My EDC Umnumzaan actually has a flat spot on the detent on the contact point where it runs over the blade. I have owned 3 other Umnumzaans and I know that one of those 3 also had a static detent with no rotation, I have no idea about the other two as they never had their balls checked.....for lack of a better expression.

When I get home tonight I will have to check my balls. Doing it at work may not be the best environment.

All 3 of my balls are in place, wait, that didn't come out quite right.
None of the Ceramic Spherical Detents on any of the 3 Zaans that I've owned rotated when opening the blade.
I have since sold one of those fine knives so I know that some other fine CRK collector has at least one fine ball as well, I don't remember exactly who purchased it but I know for a fact that it wasn't Lance Armstrong because I would've remembered that.

You guys are clowns. Seriously tho, this subject was touched on quite some ago with pictures and such and shown that the detent does in fact spin in some cases.

Ok Cody here you go again and Dave becareful about the "to much time on your hands" comment, some of the things you notice....well any way. My wife will often say "what are you doing now"! "Why are you taking more pictures" and "didn't you just take that knife apart yesterday"? I will look at my Zaans tonight and just hope she does not ask me anything about this one.

Not only is this reading material educational, but comical as well...:D
Thank you Cody and Mr. Zaan (Dave) for the info you provided. Always good reading.

I'm with you brother! Although I may joke about the thread I do find it very interesting! ! And please don't stop over thinking your Chris Reeve Knives!! I am actually going to check my small collection of Umnumzaans and see what I can find out!!
All the best, Dave

Lol Lol!! I can picture you trying to explain to your lovely wife why you keep taking your Chris Reeve Knives apart and photographing them over and over again!! Thats awesome Bill!! And oh yes I know I keep posting silly photos with very unclear questions! :D lol lol . I just wish I had the technical knowledge and skill that Cody seems to have!! I would probably post even more long boring threads!!

My greatest fear is that in bringing up this issue of rolling balls, that I have discovered yet another variation of the Zaan that Dave will have to collect! :).

Can anyone bump the old post mentioned forward or is it too old?

It wasn't that long a go but I can't rememebr who posted it or what the thread was called....I do remember nearly having to eat my hat without salt or pepper though. :p
I was quite convinced the detent was held statically in place by the staking process and I have yet to see a knife with a moving detent with my own eyes, but there are definitely examples out there. There was a vid of the detent moving posted in the thread.

IIRC our friend contacted CRK and they themselves said it was of no concern that the detent ball moved, why some do and some don't we may never know. :D

My ball sits tight - and I like the sound when it hits the blade.
On my 25 this is.

PS: just to make sure I'm gonig to check the balls regularly from now on.
