Are the two locking mechanisims the same? Also are they strong? which one is stronger?
I wont buy any more liner locks because a large number of them fail easily. I am looking for a good strong reliable folder for both daily use and defensive use as well.
I have looked at the sifu and the speed-techs but am not sure what would be the best for my needs. Anyone have experience with the sifu? thanks, Jeff

I have a BM 710 axis lock and one of the Blade Forums Red/Black Sifus. The Axis lock and the Rolling lock are totally different
in their design and function. Both are VERY strong. You would more that likely destroy the total knife in simulated testing before either fail. Under real life use, both are damb near bomb proof! Both carry well,
even the huge Sifu. I suppose which you choose would depend on the usage and size that you feel the need for. Either way
you can not loose with these two knives.

have a Great Day and good luck!

Agree that both the axis and the rolling locks are strong enough and reliable. The Axis is truly ambidexterous but a little more obtrusive. I personally prefer the rolling lock because it doesn't stick out as much.

Speed Tech lock is another category. It's a "plunge lock." From what I can tell, not being able to take the knife apart, there is a metal cylinder that slides into a hole in the blade tang when the folder is open. The button depresses the cylinder and allows the folder to close. The button is surrounded by a raised lip that prevents accidental closing. You may want to check in with Jim O'Young at speedtech for more info.

Speed tech is fully machined handle and very well done. My concern with it as a "defensive folder" is that the handle is bit slippery and cold in the winter.

You should find knives with axis locks such as the 710, 720, 730, and 740 to operate smoother than most knives with rolling locks. Another thing to consider is that the axis locks are completely ambidextrous.

Neither is apt to unlock during defensive or utilitarian use, and both are sufficiently strong to not let lock strength influence your decision.
So get out there and try to handle all of your options and just get what feels best in your hand and operates the way you prefer in a blade length and style that will facilitate your needs. Good hunting

I own knives with both types of locks and can say with confidencs that you will break either your hand or other parts of the knife before you will break the locks on either. That said, I prefer the rolling lock as the controls are a bit larger and easier to manipulate that the controls on the axis lock.

Thanks guys, Looks like I'm leaning towards the Sifu. The blade shape looks like it will perform well and I like it's size. Now all I have to do is choose the right color G-10. Later, Jeff

Go with a carbon fiber Sifu. That's my favorite of them all. Nothing fancy; just a good grip and tough as hell.
