Remember the Rolling Lock, folks? We thought the demise of REKAT meant the end of this locking mechanism. Well, prepare to rejoice as the venerable RL is set to resurface once again later this Fall. Benchmade has purchased the patent and is going to be releasing the first manual folder with the Rolling Lock.

It's dubbed the model 10200 Ambush. Designed by Mel Pardue. Two sizes are planned: 3.94" blade and a 2.96" blade versions. Both will have AUS-8 blades. The larger of the two will have aluminum scales while the smaller will have Zytel.

For those of you who have not seen the new Benchmade ad in the December blade with the Ambush in it, here it is.

ETA as of today is set for mid November [subject to change w/o notification] SRP TBA

so they combined the Axis and rolling lock designs? I had a Pioneer, the lock pin doesn't move in any sort of groove-it rotates. Can't wait to see how this one works, and if SOG has anything to say about it ;)

Cool do you guys think this is the shape of things to come?

I wonder why its better, i never owned a REKAT.

Having owned several REKATs, I don't think it was better, just different. It certainly works though. My Savant is still the strongest folder I've owned (even feels stronger in lockup than the disapointing Buck Strider I had for a month).

The Arc Lock is an infringement of the Rolling Lock right . I hope Benchmade will quick the ass of Sog.

The grit in the Roll Lock action IMO was from the spring & lock release friction against the channel it was mounted in. When the lock release or spring rubbed against the G10, it would hang up occasionally - causing a "gritty" feel. Nothing some polishing work wouldn't take care of, but functionally it didn't matter.

Still a great lock and a knife series. Now I just have to call Greg and pester him to get the Sifu reborn.

a BM Sifu would be so cool.

It really should come back after all we have it as part of our logo.

Dexter, do you know if Benchmade got the grit out of the Rolling Lock action that always bothered Roundeye?

Knowing Benchmade, it definitely will be smooth

IF you just slipped a little grease around the spring and used a little high grit polish on the end of the blade, the action would become buttery smooth on REKATs. I could only hope for a BM Sifu and Carnivour! I still need a stonewashed Sifu w/finger grooves!

Hank:cool:

The Arc-lock has more in common with the Axis lock, AFAIK. But I think I see how this BM rolling design works. The pin and lock face are probably the same as on the REKATs, and the slide was replaced with an arm that rotates with and is connected directly to the lock pin. The lock pin is now a pivot point for that stud in the grooved section, and it's probably all driven by omega springs. Wonder if I got it right :D

Sounds reasonable...and at the same time they are making the RL ambidextrous. Man, that would be great!!
