Rollock v Rollock 2: any difference?

Rollock (1) uses AUS6. Rollock 2 uses AUS4 and has a small "hook" at the base of the spine which allows for easier one hand closing.

I have a Rollock 1, great little knife.

I never had a problem closing the first rollock (pinch blade with thumb/index, and pull butt of handle back into your palm). In the spirit of Robbie's appearance thread, I have to add that I think the new blade shape looks ugly.

I haven't had a problem either but the "hook" should make things easier. I agree that it is pretty ugly. I much prefer the R1 because of the "look" and better steel. I hope I am not becoming a steel snob. :p Oddly enough I was searching for Rollock 1's online just yesterday. I have a blue plain edge but decided I want red and black as well.

Not long ago I was seeing a lot of the old version on sale for cheap. I think eknifeworks had them for $15 or so, except for the blue one for some reason.

I bought one of the $15 Rollock I from SMKW. For the price, there's no reason not to get one if you're interested.

Best Wishes,
Bob

I was not aware of the change made. I will have to try one out to compare. I have one of the original BenchMark Rolox models and the type 1 CRKT model. The only difference in the CRKT model is the fact that the blade locks up rock solid when opened compared to the original which had blade play that the paperwork says is to be expected and is normal.

I thought the original idea was good but the vertical blade play drove me crazy. It isn't just a little bit on them as anyone that owns one can attest to.

If the hook makes one hand opening easier I'm sure it will be enough to sell them. I guess I'm going to have to buy one of the new ones now.

I have not tried the R2 but the hook appears to make one hand closing easier. I don't think it affects opening.

I have a older model Rollock that I picked up on clearance at EMS; when I saw the Rollock 2 had the cutout (at the front of the thumb ramp, about where an Emerson Wave would be), I used my non-dremel rotary tool to grind out a similar hook. It's much easier for me to close one-handed now, though I find that I don't carry it much anyway.

Am I the only one that has trouble opening the Rolok as well as closing it? I guess so. I think part of it is the size because of my large hands because I can open the large original one just fine. But the CRKT R1 gives me some trouble with one hand opening and closing of it. Just too darn small.

Opening can be a little tricky when the knife is new. It will wear in and get easier. Just rock it backwards with your thumb.

Closing is easy. First press the lock release and let the blade fall back. Then lay it flat in your hand with the blade pointing past the tip of your index finger. Close your thumb down on the blade, so you are now pinching the blade with your thumb and index finger. The handle is angled toward then tip of your pinky or ring finger, but they don't hanve to do anything. Just pull your index/thumb backwards and release. The knife will close itself.

Thank you kindly for the information everyone. May you all live for a thousand years.

Now I know: 1. The knife I want (Rollock 1, don't want no barking soft blade) is disco  so I absolutely must have it right now because to delay could mean doing without. 2. The steel in the new model, while it probably won't melt in my hand from softness, has taken a demotion from the steel in the first CRKT Rollock. 3. SMKW, who I want to visit next time I'm in the neighborhood, has my order.

All the best,

oregon

Perhaps! ;)

I find it a LOT harder to close than open. As long as you can your thumb on the rear of the closed blade (which is probably the issue if you have large mitts), the opening motion is very natural. The closing motion, on the other hand, has never felt comfortable; I've always struggled with it, and rarely get it to close one-handed gracefully.

Received my transparent scaled CRKT Rollock I today. Well packaged - almost hermetically sealed in a large box, then heavy crushed paper, with boxed knife in small box and then more crushed paper. ;)

Nice knife! Probably too sophisticated for someone like me but I won't tell anyone this.

Carl64 your lucid operating instructions (shown above) should be on the enclosed CRKT brochure. I will buy you half a bottle of beer. You are a genius my friend . Flawless & unique one-hand operation. It would be a puzzle knife without your guidance. Sweet!

Fit and finish is top drawer. Just like downtown. The blade is sharp and without flaw. Locks solidly open and snaps closed. $20.98 delivered to my PO Box is a much appreciated bargain to me. Now, I'll need some folding money to test it as a money clip :D

Best,

oregon (fetching lanyard materials now)

:) Thanks. I'm glad it is working out for you, because it really is one of the coolest knives to play with once you get it working.

Someone I know had one before I did, and he always considered it a two-handed knife. When I got mine, I had the closing operation down pretty good before I showed him, and he was kind of shocked to see it worked so fast.

Carl64 explained that better than anyone I've ever seen :D He should send those instructions to CRKT !

My last contact with CRKT was...well, let's just say they probably don't want to hear my opinion on anything any more. :)

SMKW is out of the $15 + shipping, clear handle, Rollocks:(

However, I ordered a red and a blue, both plain edge, from Grand Prairie for $16 each + shipping:)

It seems I'm so slow to accept innovation that about the time I get interested in a "new" knife that they are discontinued and disappearing from vendors inventory:rolleyes:

Getting real smooth with the one-handed opening and closing of the Rollock I. So much so that I confidently show others how to one-hand handle these babies. It is fun to watch the pleasant surprise in the face of new Rollock masters:D

All the best,

oregon
