Roman Axe/Hatchet?

I keep seeing this in my A.G. Russell catalogs:

Is this an actual Roman design? I do like the bottom of the handle.
 
I don't know if that is an actual replica, but it is only for light duty. The eye is formed by steel that wraps around the helve and AFAIK the blade is spot welded in place.

Might make a decent Ulu if you got rid of the haft and cut down the eye ;-))) However, you can buy Ulu blades for 7 bucks.

It could be a "wrap around" head design affixed to the haft in the usual manner.
 
In a way it is, but what I wanted to say was that the whole construction of the head is not what I'd call heavy duty. So this thing will probably work as a hunters hatchet, but I wouldn't do any hard wood chopping with it.

It just looks flimsy and I can't bring myself to trust the design.
