The wife and I went as gladiator and Roman princess last year New Year's. We're both Italian and look our parts.

She has given me the go-ahead for a real Roman gladiator sword. She thinks knives and swords are sexy. Go figure. :)

Problem is, they all seem to be cheap stuff. Doesn't anyone make the real thing, anymore? No fantasy swords, please. I'd like something with historical detail and sheath, but modern steel.

I don't have a link for Joe but as I remember he lives on Lilly lane in Bosque Farms, NM..years ago he produced a Gladiator that was stunning in it's quality. I believe you can find him with the aid of Google..regards from Durango, Ruff Cobb

Anton Levay Owned A Smatchet?

Since an actual Gladius is bound to be very expensive, you'll have to get into the Ren Faire to um, get your mileage out of the blade.

...You know, that or fight some lions.

How about having one made. This blade by Philip Patton struck me as having a Roman look. I'm tempted myself!

Steel: O1 ground, not forged

Blade length: 14-1/4"

Total length: 20 3/8"

Blade thickness: 1/4"

Handle material: black canvas micarta

Price: $500 + $15 shipping

I can take paypal, check, or MO. If using paypal, please include 3% for their fees...

No sheath, but I can make one for $50 extra if you want it.

Thanks for looking!

I'm going to move this from General Knife to our Sword forum.

Do some research on this to be sure, but the gladius was a Roman Army sword. Gladiators were professional swordsmen of the arena, and might have used any of a variety of swords, including the gladius, depending on the role they were taking.

Surprised no one has mentioned ALBION SWORDS. They make high-quality historically accurate swords, they have several gladius design and will soon be producing a couple different spatha. Their rep is excellent.

IMO the linked armor god site stuff is JUNK, the site is ripping off images from other makers, and further, mis-describes/identifies what they are selling (the gladius was not so called because it was used by gladiators, and the design did not evolve over time because of a need to penetrate armor).

Not to mention when buying swords, you get what you pay for. If you want a wall-hanger sword-like decoration they may do fine, if you hope to swing the sword, much less hit a target, good design, workmanship, and tempering of steel is a must.

The market has been flooded with Roman and Pirate stuff the vast bulk of which is costume grade. There are a few who make high end swords (the goog stuff).

Albion is among the top makers on the planet. I tend to favor them because their swords just feel right in the hand. They are a bit more expensive but they are made well and made correctly. You will need to have a sheath made which they can also do.

If tomorrow the armies assembled those with Albion swords would be envied.

August 1st they're doing an across the board 11% price increase...

Do it!! This is one of my favorite knives. It's smaller than it looks, but probably not to much smaller than the originals. It's definitely a modern interpretation though.

I can offer a third vote for Albion. I was able to handle a couple of their Roman swords at a knife show and they're very nice.

Another option would be custom with John Lundemo of OdinBlades. Here's a couple of his roman styled blades.
