The sica is really a Dacian weapon This was a slightly different design than that used by the Gladiators during the Imperial Period. That particular was a big two hand thing, if Im not mistaken. I have a custom made Imperial Period Sica that is based on the specs off one of the roman sculptural panels ( sorry I lost the card of the maker but he was referred to me by someone on this forum...) . It was the primary weapon of the Thraex which was usually paired against the Murmillo. The Sica that acute angle on the blade was designed to go around the big shield (Scutum) of the Murmillo. The Sica was used in conjunction with a smaller version of the Scutum. I did quite a bit of training with this thing and it is reall a very unique weapon. In spite of that angle it is a really good thrusting weapon that sort snakes around the opponent's shield to damage arms or legs. Really a nasty bastard. I have a partially finished manuscript on Gladitorial combat that is devoted to the Murmillio, Thraex, and Hiplomachus Gladiator types but it's been on the back burner now for over 2 years mainly because I've not had the time to devote to the training associated with this martial art. One of the gladiatorial sites on-line from England has chat line that you can ask questions on but like Bladeforums it is frequented by both Jerks, Trolls, historical purist and Real people too. So you have to measure what you get there. The group that works with Dr. Marcus Junkelmann seem to be the authorative experts on this type of fighting. The Spike T.V. Deadlist Warriors featured another group of guys that appear to know what they are doing but their history is a bit outside the box.
Mike Loades is also doing some of this stuff too.

Let me know and I'll send you the specs on my Sica. Like most gladiatoral weapon it is like the arena gladius which was smaller than that used by the Roman Military. To me the Falcata is another interesting type of weapon that the Roman Army had a lot of respect for. Oh well , hope this helps.

Thank you gentlemen I had seen that show deadliest warrior and saw the Sica and I had known about that sword but never knew the name of it.

THE sica it is not a specific weapon, sica in Latin it is the generic name of dagger.

The Roman army used a great variety of weapons because it was formed from all the bordering Italic people: Marsi,Equi,Sabini,Volsci etc.all the cut weapons were typical of all the people of the Mediterranean one while all the point weapons,Pilum,Spatha,Gladius,Gladius a stami( the small gladius) were used only by the italic people-

Yes, that may be true.....but there is sure a lot of books and articles that identify this as a weapon. I'm sorry that those esteemed historians did not take the time to consult with you. Tell me the name of the weapon and don't leave us hanging here in the air.

O.K. that's fine but I don't remember saying anything like this. I was talking about gladiators.

OK- I have spoken in general of weapons because a lot of the weapons used by the gladiators were the same used by the army,in fact many italic soldiers fought for money in the arenas using her same weapons that used in war-Excuse me with the hesteeemed historians and excuse me for my intervention-
Thanks!

Seriously, I appreciate the input and since you are geographically closer to the subject than me, I would welcome in comments you may have in the future. Welcome aboard.
