I understand there are some made to mil-spec but were not army issue. A friendly gun dealer told me they are okay & that he had one. The problem is that his is tricked out & he said that I didn't need one that expensive . [ honest dealer ]

He said I could probably get one at the gunshow here on the 18th & $300 should get me a good one.

This venture is from my wife's largesse since we are still worrking AWAY from a divorce & she's spending much more to go to a church seminar in Indianapolis .

Anyone have the Romanian ? Any problems ?

there "ok" but your going to be dissapointed.

for about the same price you can get a SAR1 and have alot better of a ak.

a SAR 1 is a romanian AK. Even low end ak's are going for $350-450 now. I saw some romanian stuff for $400 at the last gunshow. I recommend dropping the extra money and getting an Arsenal or VEPR.

thats what i did, bulgarian is about the best you can get.

i still want another cheap beater though.

Don't have enough expertise to look up these. Can you give me a clue ?

I had one of these (a WASR10) until recently. Things to look out for on them are "canting" - IOW, the front site and / or rear sites may not be on straight - many times the cant is only slight & you can adjust the sites to make up for it. Sometimes they are too out of spec for that though... Also, take time to insert a variety of mags into the gun & make sure they will insert easily. Sometimes they can have feeding problems - it's like old GM cars - if you get one built on a Monday or a Friday it might be way off - Century is the importer & the company that modifies them & QC is variable.

Kabar posted a nice AK clone (they are all clones BTW - real AK47's are selective fire weapons & cannot be legally owned without a class III license). His has the milled reciever - note the 'dimple' manufactured into the side of the reciever just above the magwell. Sweet!!!

I didn't like my WASR10 - it had the canting problem. And beyond that, I just couldn't get used to the site picture for that gun - it always seemed like I was 'hunching' over the gun in order to use the sites. A buddy has one & loves his though so to each his own.

I traded mine for a Norinco (Chicom) SKS sporter model which are SKSs modified at the factory in China to accept AK mags. - I love it & ain't lookin back...

I'm out of my area of expertise on recent weaponry, anything after the Korean war is virgin territory. I do have an enormous, well illustrated book [ with fold outs ] of modern weaponry from the late 1800's until the mid-70's. It just touches on the 'Nam era . Going to the fairgrounds the 18th or 19th ?

Naw - I'm broke & limping around; both from knee surgery last week :(

Maybe next time?

I've picked up some goodies at the Wednesday fleamarket at the fairgrounds.Bought a cherry[almost] single12 gauge for daughter's husband to use as a snake gun. Sixty dollars & it still has the "new" stiffness.
I want to shorten it because he runs in the woods with the dogs & recently almost ran into a full grown brown bear. Shortened,he could run at port arms.

i have had great luck with 3 romanian AKs, 2 AK47's and 1 '74, all have been just fine, a SAR1 is romanian and is a great rifle. the WASRs dont have the dimple and for really just that reason i prefer the SARs but a bud has a WASR and it works/fires just fine, typical AKM.

the bulgarians are good too, and imho have the best finish of any barring a older chinese polytech legend, but function /accuracy isnt any better imho, i have not seen any accuracy loss with the stamped vs forged rec'rs, not enough to worry about anyway. a bud who is a dealer took out 2 AKs randomly from ~ 20 and tested for accuracy, a stamped and a cast, the stamped was a LITTLE more accurate, go figure.

i have also had good luck with egyptian maahdis, my maahdi AKM is the most accurate AKM i have ever shot, FWIW.

one plus of the romanians is the side rail for the scope, IIRC almost all have it, '74's do anyway, a great way to add a aimpoint, i really like my romanian AK74 w/a EG folding stock, B-square mount and an older aimpoint site, a very handy little short carbine.

Definiteley check into the Arsenal AK with the milled reciever. My friend has a Romanian AK and is always complaining about the sites being off and handle/front handle wobble. Arsenal's Milled AK is by far my personal favorite right now because of its solid biuld and its backed by a great company.

My Bulgarian Arsenal SLR-101 shoots 2.5" groups at 100 yards. It's very rare that a romanian gun even comes close to that. I do disagree on the finish though. That's my one complaint about the SLR. The finish looks great out of the box, but isn't all that durable. Gun scrubber takes it off, hell, rubbing alcohol took some off. After the first incident i just made the decision never to clean the gun again (no issues). If i do i may just refinish it with guncoat. They may have improved this since.

mines a stamped reciver, not fordged. BUT its a 1.6mm reciever, not a 1mm like all the others. the 1.6s are as strong as the millled but lighter.

have you ever thaught of a saiga, there TRUE russians and there nearly as cheap as a romanian in alot of cases. plus you can get them in what ever cal. you want. the ones below in order are 12G, .308, (last two)7.62x39.

I picked one up a few years ago, and I've never had any other problem than smoking the front hand guard... Okay, we burned almost twenty mags in about three minutes - never had a misfire, misfeed, jam, stoppage...nothing but smoke and sizzle inside the wood handguard... :D
And for the use, well, we didn't miss anything out to 70'... and I figure if I have to take a sight pic on anything closer, it won't much matter about the sights... and with an Aimpoint on top, I don't tend to look at the ironsights anyhow...
