Hi all,

I am throwing up an initial review of the Ron flaherty model 1. I am also looking to hear your opinions and experience.

First few things when I had just got the knife: I had opened up the box and bam, was instantly impressed. Fit and finish are more than what i expected for knife that run 250$. The knife came with a maroon micarta scale, a ti lock side scale and an A2 blade.

First day: smooth operation, opening this thing is extremely smooth. In fact it flips open like a flipper with barely any wrist action.

Issues: blade detent. While the knife opens smoothly, it is definitely needing a little stronger detent for my taste. When you try to apply the Australian flick test it opens up.
Lockup. This thing has the smallest amount of lockup that I have seen on a knife, production or custom. It engages and stays at 1-4%. I highly doubt it will come unengaged though!! In use this knife appears to have a stronger lockup as the lock bar gets pushed a little further in. Disengaging the lock is as easy as it gets and there is no sticky lock issues.
Blade: this slices like a dream, originally I wanted a .2 bladed a2 version. The edge is sharp as a razor out of the box and eats up all sorts of materials. there seems to be an issue with acidic foods, as I cut tomatoes last night and bam there is some heavy looking staining.

Ex: it helped prepare dinner last night and sliced through everything from onions to sweet potatoes.

Question to all: Does anyone have an idea what causes this kind of staining on A2? How do I get rid of it or what kind of maintenance does a it need, a gun oil coat?

Photos will be up later today!! Great knife!! I think I will buy another, but I'm hoping he uses a different material for the blade.

Does anyone know if ron is finally taking orders?

A2 will develop a patina easily with normal use. if you want to minimize that while continuing to use it for slicing food, i suggest you use food grade mineral oil after cleaning it off right away after using it. I had one of those folders and was very impressed with it.
