I was on my computer this morning, and my wife called me to the TV. When I got there, Ron Hood was on a FOX TV special for wilderness survival. He did the bow and drill method for starting fires, and taught the "green peas" a thing or two about eating grubs and other natural procurement. I was impressed by the way he gradually took away the "comforts" of the campers...the water...the food...the shelter...until they were forced to thrive or "be miserable". Meanwhile, the camera showed Ron being quite comfortable in his hollowed out "hole in the ground". Cheers to Ron for an excellent performance and for teaching those less educated...an important lesson to surviving the wilderness. It brings back memories of me winning a survival trip to "Simply Survival" in Washington. That trip really changed my life and I enjoy sharing my adventures with other extremists....So, c'mon , Ron...what can I do...let's have a competition for a survival trip under YOUR leadership....I would LOVE it.:D

Thanks for the kind words! I had no idea that the program was on. It almost sounds like the program we did for Backpacker Ragazine when I took the Executive Editor and his assistant out for a week.

As you said, these trips can change your life. Greg Davenport is an excellent teacher and VERY well qualified. It's no wonder you came away with such a sense of accomplishment.

I no longer run field trips. I'm sorta getting long in the tooth and we are focusing on getting the most information we can to the largest audience for the least money through our video series (now 16 videos). I have to admit tho that Karen and I often talk about "Just one more trip" or "One more season". We know tho' that when the summer hits... we are gonna be in the woods doing our thing.

Thank you for the response Ron, Yes I think it was the Backpacker episode. If you ever think about doing another trip please let me know. The show looked great and alot of fun. I love, those survival trips, you learn alot (about youself and the wilderness).
Thanks-
Ron M.

Darn, can't believe I missed that! Do you remember the title of the show? Maybe it will air again.

The series was called "Anyplace Wild" and the episode was titled "survival School". When it was shot it was with an eye toward a 1 hour show and it was to be the season opener. It ended up being the second show and 30 minutes. I did hear from one person that the version they saw was one hour... I never saw that one.

Photos and story from the shoot are in our library area of the site. I guess it comes on somewhere every 6 months or so.

I saw it this morning and taped it. I probably broke many laws by taping it and I'm sure the Feds will come busting down my door within the hour of my posting this. At least I'll be housed in protective custody, as I'm a corrections officer and would hate to be in GP.

I'll use the Twinkie Defense and maybe write a book about the experience. Sell the rights for the movie to Spielberg. Make a couple zillion and buy Cananda for my own private estate. Do the Brits give up on colonies still?

Sorry to be so silly, just pulled a double and feeling a bit wonky.

Anyhow..........................

Great episode. Ron,I believe you are the real thing. Thanks for sharing your knowlege with the world like you have done.

Check your local library. Ours has a few in the series.

I was sooooo pissed I missed part of it. I was shouting Ron Hood, on F-ing TV! Arrrrrrrrrgggggghhhhhhh!!!!!! Hey wait a minute, that's not Karen. Ok so it's not one if HIS videos, so I can calm down a little. Man I am screwed if I'm forced to survive. I hate fish. Good thing I live near a bunch of liberals. Long Pig anyone? Thanks Ron, that crappin in the woods story had me and my pop, (a veteran Marine and backpacker of 40 years) in tears for weeks. You definitely win the Eule Gibbons award.

I missed the show on t.v. but I recently came across a set of his videos,Wilderness Survival 1 and 2,I think that is what it is called. They are awsome,I am planning on ordering more soon from his website.Wish I had cook like Karen.WOW!!!!
