I had just been watching Ron's trapping and primitive weapons videos this past week again.
Well, the info in them came in handy this past weekend. While skiing in Vermont, I had an opportunity to use the info to help me out in a jam on the slopes (no I didn't build a Viet Cong crossbow to remove slow skiiers from my path or trap rude, punk-a** snowboarders in snares. I'll try that next trip.
)
I was skiing on boots that are little too old, in minus 25 degree weather (with wind chill), and all the buckles on my left boot froze and broke. Hard to control a ski with a boot that wants to fly off your foot.
Using a little paracord that I had, I fashioned a double loop knot. It was almost exactly the one Ron shows in the trapping video for lashing the branch snare engine to a tree. It worked perfectly as an emergency strap/buckle, but I needed more reinforcement around the rest of the boot for a snug fit. I diced up my leather belt and double-twisted several pieces of cordage from the strips, and tied them above and below. (While doing this, I was getting really funny stares from passing skiiers.) Anyway,
VOILA!
I continued skiing without a problem for the rest of the trip.
The techniques Ron showed were first and foremost in my mind because I had rewatched the videos, and they were the absolutely perfect solution!
Just thought it might be interesting to the forum members.
Peace,
Brian.
