rookie custom knife questions

I am a rookie to the thought of owning a custom or custom production knife as some may be and dont know where all to find info. I am fairly informed on knives in general and steel however this custom information is so diverse given there are tons of makers guilded and not. I already have a expensive softball habit so I cant afford to dish out tons of money on customs. My question really is are there any custom makers that make decent fit and finish knives under $200 ? I mainly collect fixed blades and enjoy simple designs with little to no embellishment, just humble functional pieces. Any suggestions or help appreciated. Sorry if this is a noobie question here I am a frequent board member on a major softball board and get irritated with noobie questions...so I apologize.

Hello,
for under 200$ I think you could have a hard time to find something decent like a big fighter or bowie.
But I saw recently a Nessmuk style knife for about 200 or less. Same with some german custom makers, of course you can't expect a 10" Bowie, but a small hunter, skinner or neck knife.
Or have a look for skandinavian puukkos.

No stupid questions. Just answers.... ;)

Dollar for dollar the forum For Sale boards is a perfect venue to find quality customs in the range you are limited to. Many $300-$400 knives will part company in dire times for $200.

Yes, there are makers who will also build you knives in this range, too.

What's your particular interest?

Justin Gingrich at www.rangerknives.com has made a bunch of customs for under $200. So has Will Leavitt. Actually, there are a huge number of makers making high quality fixed blades for under $200.

thanks for the input guys... to answer questions in no particuler order.......I am not all that interested in mini sword/knives :) at this time, mainly looking at hunting style knives, skinners, or just a medium size utility boot type knife....probably in the 3" to 6" blade range. actually I have a thing for d2 hunter at the moment :). Style to me is kind of relative as design, grind and finish all lend to one another IMO and I guess I prefer flat grinds

Take a good look at Gene Ingram's knives at

http://geneingramknives.blademakers.com/

Put 10 bucks on your 200 dollar figure and you can't go wrong with several in his line for a well built "using" knife and a solid buy for the money.

I have a GWB and a No. 2 Skinner w/GWB handle and love them both.

Good luck

Pohan Leu can make some "very" nice fixed blades for under $200. Check out his site. I EDC his 4' kozuka.

Also I'd say Bark River as far as semicustom fixed blades. A lot of bang for the $$$ IMO.;)

I recently bought some custom fixed blades by Matthew Bailey, who sells some of his stuff in the Knifemakers' For Sale area on BF. They are nice knives, under $200 each, and I think they are a great value for the price.

Bob Dozier has some simple, high quality knives in D2, but they may be just a hair over @200. Maybe a used one for less, if you wait and look.

Lots of options, and his heat treat and edge geometry make for excellent hunters/utility.

Dozier is good for hunting knives. Try Bud Nealy for a great boot knife.

I think that Eddie White at Shadow Knives makes an incredible knife for less than $200............also G L Drew makes some great knives for less than 200.
Check out the fixed blades for sale and look around. There are some wonderful makers out there.
