HI all... How are you? I am looking for a multi-knife that would be more suitable for fishing/ camping. I am looking at the Buck 730 X-tract. I think the piler would be a good help when taking the hooks out?!

Any suggestions? TIA

Bruce

I don't own that particular buck, buck am very pleased with the bucks I do own. They stand behind their product,so if I liked the model I'd try it out.

With that said,my favorite maker of multi tool-knives is still Victorinox,I find them very well designed and well made. They have several models available with pliers as well as their swisstool and swisstool spirit.I especially like the larger contoured grip models for outdoor use.

And by the way,Welcome to bladeforums Bruce!

Hi Bruce-YVR, I've never used that Buck, but I've only really heard good things about it. There are lots of great tools out there that would probably suit your needs, what things are important to you?

Fit & finish, rust resistance: probably Vic would be your best bet.
One hand opening knife: Leatherman Wave/Charge/Surge or the Buck you mentioned.
Strong and fully loaded: Leatherman Surge or Core, or Vic SwissTool.
Small and easy to carry: Leatherman Juice line.

Those are just a few thoughts, hope they're helpful!

1) Do you want a plier-based or knife-based tool? You seem to indicate you want pliers. If so, make sure you find a model with loonng needle nose point pliers. It will make hook disgorging easier.

2) Consider carrying a knife (such as a SAK) and a pair of fishing pliers. Less bulk, mor options.

Good Luck with whatever you decide. Check back often.

I recommend one of the Victorinox Swisstools. Check them out and decide on which one has the features you want. My favorite is the Spirit, but I also have an original Swisstool. Pair it with a small fixed blade knife and you can rule the planet!

I agree with this response. A good general camping/fishing knife would be a SAK (I like the huntsman and climber models) or a Buck (being a little older I prefer the 110 or 112 folder) or something like a Spyderco Delica. I would get a good pair of pliers or forcepts for the hook removal part or you will end up with fish slime and boat grime all over your knife.

I would heartily recommend the Victorinox Skipper. The shackle opener/marlin spike is actually a pretty handy little tool for all sorts of things.
