I am a rookie at sharpning knives and own a few dull hunting knives that I would like to get sharp. After doing some browsing on here it looks like a good combo would be:

DMT aligner system for creating the correct bevel I need and maybe the Sharpmaker for maintaining a razors edge. I would like to here some feedback from some of you pro's. I am interseted in just keeping my hunting and deer processing knifes as sharp as they can be. Also would I need a steel rod? Thx in advance for the help!

After doing alot of research...I think I am going to order the Edgepro Apex. Anyone think this is a good start? If I do this would I need the Sharpmaker to compliment the Edgepro? Also if I choose to polish edges...do I buy the finer stickers for the edgepro or use a leather strop? Thx

You will be well served going either route (from your original post).

The DMT/Sharpmaker combo would work quite well for most any application and is very flexible (allowing a variety of uses).

The Edgepro will handle virtually everything by itself but it is nice to have a strop, hand held ceramic (like the Spyderco DoubleStuff) or Sharpmaker for quick touch-ups. (If you use the tapes or 1000 grit stone there is no particular "need" for finishing on a strop or ceramic unless you so desire.)

Been doing this for about 15 years. Works great, and your knives will be plenty sharp for anything. Easy, and really quick to resharpen on the sharpmaker (takes me about a minute).
