Hey, my roommate is looking for a decent punch dagger.
I've convinced her to pay for quality and get a good production knife instead of the knock-off crap at the local stores. She's like me and doesn't want to shell out for an EDC knife that she hasn't had a chance to pick up and see how it feels, especially since she has small hands.

This is targeted towards last ditch self defense, both her and my girlfriend work in a stockroom at the local mall and the walk to the car makes both of them nervous at times. Of course I'm going to let my roommate do the leg work and then buy one for my girlfriend if she likes it. ;) (my girl currently carries my CRKT BladeLock and I want it back):grumpy:

What do you recommend that I/she looks(s) for a the next gun + knife show we make it to?? Brands? Mfgr's?? Maybe even someone who could customize a production knife to suit her??

the cold steel safe keepers are nice, the smaller ones are the urban pals and mini pals you shoul look at those to

Well, if you really want to go "all out", you could get a Mel Pardue folding auto pushdagger...although you would have to have loose laws where you live...this is 1) an auto 2) double edge 3) a pushdagger

Is that really a good knife for the average person?
I look at that style knife as something for an expert.
It's also illegal in a lot of places.
Doesn't matter if you defend your like. Sure as hell does. Defending your life often leads to defending yourself on court. Why give them more to use against you?
I'm not meaning to be knocking the choice. Just offering something to consider.

I have to agree with TomW on this. She's probably better off with pepper spray and a stun gun, and maybe something like a Spyderco Endura. It's a lot easier to pass and Endura off as a tool that became a weapon out of necessity; that way the lawyers will have a tougher time arguing that she was out looking for a fight. Just my .02. And, the Cold Steel Safe Keepers are the only production push daggers I'm aware of, although I'm sure there must be others.

Actually, the push-dagger is one of those knives that can be used by just about anyone. It's not at all what I'd consider a knife that should only be wielded by 'experts.'

Oh, and civilian stunguns are pure crap for defensive applications. Might as well just flush your money down the toilet, that way you at least won't have a false sense of security. (Stun guns make great toys, annoyance devices, or ignition systems for potato guns. They're fun to use on your friends... that's about it though.)

I second the suggestion to look at Cold Steel's offerings.

The legal implications should not be ignored on this one, but as far as this being a knife only for 'experts,' I strongly disagree.

If she has martial arts/boxing training a push dagger can be a good self-defense tool. If she does not have any training and isn't willing to get any buy her a can of good quality pepper spray and a pair of running shoes. Do not buy her a stun.

Push daggers are ideal defensive knives for non-knife people. You can hold one unsheathed and no one may even notice, in a dark lot at night. They are hard to disarm and their use is almost intuitive: throw a punch.

But the Comtech stinger will do about as much damage as a small push dagger, given experience in throwing a good punch. And the stinger doesn't shed some bad guy's blood all over you.

The stinger can go on a keychain. No one will tell you not to have your car keys in hand, walking to your car. An innocuous weapon in plain sight, that no one notices.

If it's a really bad area, avoid close contact. Pepper spray, scream, and run.

 Now, that's a knife!

Does it open into a straight knife, also?

I agree with the others who suggest the Safekeepers. Get the double edged if it is leagal and you want a pure weapon and the single edge one if double edged knives are illegal and/or you also want a tool.

Thats the sticky wicket, its not a "bad area". Its a mall parking lot after regular hours, not particularly dangerous its just not the place where one wants to be caught alone without a bit of an edge (no pun intended).

The Cold Steel Safekeepers look like a good choice, concievably they'd get some use out of the single edge to open boxes and whatnot. The comments regarding non-lethal's will be taken into condsideration as well.

It takes BALLS to use a push dagger not expertise.

If someone trying to kill you or f*ck you in the ass without your permission doesnt make you grow a set of balls, you're just a bipedal cheeseburger anyway.

As others have said, stun guns should be regarded as useless fluff.

Mace/pepper spray has its place but it is NOT a fight/assualt stopper - some people it stops, sure, but many it does not. As a blinding agent for temporary distraction/eye jab in a can, its great.

The Comtech Stinger - a DEFINATE good idea. Not all situations require sticking someone with a knife - the stinger is a devastating little tool and plenty cheap, get two or three to keep on the car keys, house keys and in your pocket. http://www.donrearic.com/stingerchinook.html

A push dagger - very good idea for a self defense tool. Punching isnt a hard thing to learn, and using a push knife is almost instinctual when it comes down to it. My advice is to avoid double edges, a single edged push knife will work just as well and not be so legally questionable. That said, read Don Rearics article ont he MercWorx push dagger, he imparts a lot of great concepts about this style of knife within that article, http://www.donrearic.com/mercworx.html

Anza makes a nice looking push knife for $50:

Its on the Knife of the Month page ont he Anza site, http://www.anzaknives.com/knive_of_the_month/Knife_of_the_month.htm
Its a nice design, will penetrate well, and the handle looks like it will be comfortable.
Take the money you save and get a nice sheath from www.survivalsheath.com that will meet her concealment needs. (get a stinger there too)

You may also want to look at this knife/point her towards it:

Its Mickey Yurco's take on the push knife, and a good take it is. Because of the egg shaped handle, it CAN be used in a forward grip, so the claim that it is a legal utility knife and not a T handle push knife is a valid one. The fact that it CAN be used as one is incidental. Its also a great design and Mickey's stuff is great.
Omega Tactical, www.omegatactical.com , has one in stock for $155 - and for more, Mickey Y. posts on www.selfdefenseforums.com as "Mickey" (think he posts here as that too) so you should be able to get in touch with him there.

A push knife is a great great idea. :)

let's stop all the agressive red neck type bs.
Buy the woman a knife and the EXTREME likeyhood of an agressive person punching her in the face. taking it away from her and slitting her throatis a hell of a lot more likely than her growing a set of balls. It's wonderful you care about your friends. do them a favor- give them a stay alive course not a knife.
DO NOT listen to wet dream knife nuts telling you something that's likely to get your friend killed

TomW, I couldn't agree more. Arming someone who has no orientation toward self-defense, and expecting the blade to do all the defending, is counterproductive. I would recommend a swift kick in the shin first.

But some people can be taught, and then armed. That's why I prefer the idea of a stinger or even a push dagger, because it isn't as disarmable.

What I don't recommend is leaving the weakest to the mercy of the thugs. Attitude is everything: refuse to be a victim. Considering the gutter trash out there, not being armed is more likely to get someone killed.

Good point Essav. In this case it sounds as if she feels the desire to be armed, which is usually indicative of a good defensive mindset. Sheeple don't want to be able to fight back, they want someone else to do it for them or naively want to believe that it won't happen in the first place. The first and most important aspect is that a person be willing to defend themselves from attack; then the blanks need to be filled in so they are able to do so. Perhaps my suggestion of a stun gun wasn't very worthwhile; most people here seem to believe that they're crap. I was just trying to think of some other SD items that aren't lethal. I will say that pepper spray sure as hell is effective; I got some of that crap in my eyes once and I wasn't going to hurt anyone for at least five minutes. So it 'only' blinds a person; that gives you a chance to run doesn't it? Or attack with your other weapon. Try a little out on yourself and see what I mean. I'm not suggesting that she rely on non-lethal means, but look into them as a supplement. It's better to be tried by twelve than be carried by six, but if you can avoid both it'll make your world a lot simpler.

Edited to add:

I just thought of another great SD tool as well; look at getting a Surefire or other super bright tactical light. Criminals fear being seen, and getting hit in the eyes in the dark with 60 or 120 lumens is no joke. It's very simple but also very effective and long range. Just keep spare batteries on hand because those things burn through them very quickly. Good luck.
