Hello guys!!!

What do you think the postman brought me today???
Right!!! My custom - made combo of Roselli knives!
When I opened the parcel, my heart was beating in a way a child's heart will beat if it enters the room in which the christmas tree in all his beauty shines in the brightest light! And, last but not least,.........you'll never know what finally comes out!

The big leuku has a blade length of 19.5 cm (7.8") and a thickness of 4,1mm (o.16") and is made of hand forged high carbon steel to a hardness of 60 HRC.

The puukko has a blade length of 85 mm (3.35") and a thickness of 3.3 mm (0.13") and is made of hand forged UHC ultra high carbon steel to a Rockwell hardness of 66 HRC.
Both knives came with beautiful grained curly birch handles and a handcrafted beautiful and strong leather sheat of thick dark brown leather. Compared to the standard finish quality the Roselli's come with, and which is very good at all, these knives came in an absolute flawless finish and you can easily see that all the components are hand - picked.

All in all, a superb combo of nordic knives with almost top custom grade, the very best finished nordic knives I ever handled.
Together with the knives there was a photograph in the parcel, showing Heimo Roselli while he is forging my knives and handsigned by himself and a natural field sharpening stone and a short letter in which they tell me, that this is a unique knife combo which noone else in the world would have. And,.......last but not least, a single sheat for the leuku and one for the puukko in case I should ever wish to wear the knives as single knives, depending on my needs.

All in all I have to say that this is a combo of which I am really proud,

You got just the roselli models I want: carbonsteel leuku and UHC steel carpenters puukko. I'm happy that you are pleased. How much extra did that special order cost? I'm not trying to order one like yours I'm just qurious.

Tommi,......... close to the fact that it is top custom quality I got a very good price, I've paid 195,-- in total and that is quite a very very good price for a unique combo where I am the only one in the world who has this combo, as I said, it was made especially for me and is not in their standard product range.

Gerry,

As you and I have discussed, that's just an outstanding combination!
I hope it serves you well for years to come.

That is a beautiful, and the ideal, functional combo! You've got the best of both worlds there. I've got the bigger, wider Puukko, not sure of the name, and I am more than pleased with the Roselli knives. My next search will be for the Leuku.

And Tommi, you can get the production versions of these knives, and with the right amount of arm twisting.... someone with some leather experience can be convinced to do a similar carry rig!:p

These Scandinavian style knives have really become popular as of late! I was into these knives way before they got interesting, now I cant seem to talk anyone out of thier's. :) I also started doing the traditional sheath designs about a year ago. Talk about a completely different way of constructing a sheath! I wasted a lot of leather before I got it somewhat down. AND a few really scary cuts and close calls before I realized a better way of removing the knives from the wet leather molds!!! eeeep!!

That's $195 US? And did you order these beautiful knives directly from Finland? If so, how much was the shipping?

Guys,
thank you for the good feedback you gave me concerning the combo.

Trying to answer all the questions:

First of all,...... this combo is not within the standard produckt range of Roselli knives. It is really custom, that's why shipping can take some time, but, nevertheless, it's worth waiting! The sheats are also handcrafted by a local leathersmith, Roselli does not produce the sheats. Anyway,...... all that is time consuming.

Maybe it is interesting, how I got the idea of having such a combo tailored to my special needs. Some time ago, I discussed with a guy, a good friend of mine the ideal hunting knife and after quite a few hours of reflecting our needs and the situations with which you get confronted during hunting and beeing outdoors we came to the conclusion, that one knife would rarely be enough to manage every situation in the very best way, so the result of our study was that at least two knives were necessary.

First we had an eye to the numerous knives we already own and sure, we found some knives that would fulfill the expectations but,..... if you are outdoors (hunting, hiking, exploring or just poor surving) you are mostly limited to weight and everyting needs to be at hand in short time and I think noone would bother with finding the knife in the rucksack or wherever if he needs it instantly.

Second was that we found out that it always took us some manipulation to get the knives out of the sheat and that most sheats are made in a way that you would need two hands to get them out and also for resheating the knife. At home, in the garden,....... that's okay and I wouldn't bother at all but being outdoors I don't want to fumble around,........ not to forget that you can not make a wish concerning the weather conditions......

And the third thing was that every knife we had was, like most knives, a compromise between form and function. Finally we agreed that a job could be done best only with the tool made to manage this specific task. We agreed further that we wouldn't need either sharpened prybars nor super thin slicers but functional blades with a no-nonsense-approach!

That is, how this idea was born. We have been looking around to find the right combo and sure we would have found some good working combos, for example from Jarvenpaa or Marttiini, but we also found out, that all these were "commercial compromises". Either the blade length of the two knives differed from what we considered to be perfect or the thickness of the blades seemed to be not right......

Finally we got in contact with Roselli and I discussed with them the possibility of having such knives custom made to our specific considerations. It was a long way to come on the same wavelength but finally they were very enthusiastic in helping us. I think that was the time, when the relation between me and Kari Loippo, one of the very good guys of Roselli was founded and got deeper. He managed to make everything perfect and I spoke to him yesterday and he told me that it was a pleasure for him to help me.

I got a lot of mails from people who also want to have that combo and I told him. He was for sure very please, but he also told me that the prices I got have been "friendship" - prices. That does not mean that noone else will get very good and reasonable prices, a friend of mine from Florida also wants to have such a combo and the price he will have to pay for exact the same combo including handling, shipment and spare sheat for the puukko (to use the puukko as a single knife) will be 239,-- EURO, that is actually the same in US $. I think that is very very fair, isn't it?

greetings,
Gerry
