I think they both are correct. You can’t rely on spelling from back then. Especially slang terms. Which were often spelled phonetically. People wrote what they thought they heard.

Before any hearing protection was available most probably didn’t hear anything very well over the ringing.

There were also a lot more local accents and dialects back then.

Don’t forget this same period gave us KA-BAR The phonetic(ish) spelling for “killed a bear”.
