Like everyone here with a Becker I want to keep it nice and rust free. Rather than use WD40 or mineral oil In looking to use a nice edible oil that does not go rancid. Anyone got any good oils or food stuff they use?

Also I have heard of many using Carmex, Lipsil, Vaseline type lip oil products to give a nice cover over the blade and edible. Any metalegists here know if one or all of these contain any chemicals that would not be best used on a 1095CV??

Also I have heard someone say they used to put a light coat of wax/rub of a candle over their blade when storing it. Anyone here do that technique?

Mineral oil from the pharmacy is completely edible. Even has doseage instructions. That's all I use.

You mean like the Caster Oil from Pharmacy they used to give to kids?

That is edible, but so is olive oil, but olive oil can go rancid a bit, not sure how long it would take on a knife, but a thin coat exposed to air I can see it oxidising in no time.

Not castor oil. Mineral oil.

Mineral oil is food safe. I buy it in the pharmacy, where it's sold as a laxative (in larger doses). I just saw the chapstick idea the other day. Seems like it would work.

Honestly, I think that the biggest thing is to keep the blade dry. Dry it off and then let it air dry a bit before sheathing it. Should be fine.
YMMV if you're in a markedly different climate though.

Mineral oil is fine.
It can get sticky if the blade sits unused for weeks at a time.
Just make sure to wipe it down again every few weeks if you're not using it.
Olive oil is fine too, but just don't let it sit for too long.

Yep, mineral oil from the pharmarcy is what I use. It's like $2 / pint.

Mineral oil is the major component of treatments for wood cutting boards.

The is also a thread showing the use of canning wax to coat blades as well.

Yeah I do like the ChapStick idea as its handy.
Laxative Oil for a Becker I can see that helping keep the 'crap' off.

Bingo. I treat my boards with mineral oil from time to time. Seals them and keeps bad bacteria at bay.

👍

I always use salt and lemon on chopping board as always to hand. Never used mineral oil, so may get some for the multi-uses I have now.

For the woods I actually keep a tube of Chapstick in my pocket/pack and it works great to repel rust

Mineral oil is joust fine and so is Vaseline...... I always have a small tube of Vaseline (in my left front cargo pocket)for cuts, burns and fire making..... Vaseline is what Cammillus used to protect the edge before shipping and was Phil Gibbs's idea and it worked great... The paraffin / candle wax idea is something I am experimenting with and was CMRick's contribution....... Vaseline, paraffin and mineral oil will never go rancid on you and are edible in reasonable amounts...... The Vaseline guy took a tablespoon every day for umpteen bazillion years and lived into his nineties, if memory serves.....

Hope this helps.......

Thanks Ethan! You testing and experience on this is very reassuring - good to know there is no negative effects on the steel.

There is only two of my Becker I use for food processing, so those two get a wipe down with a dry cloth, and no oils. They haven't developed any rust. The rest get some rem oil or whatever I have available. I'm not real picky, and truth be told, I have a few I have never oiled at all. I just dry them real good...if I think about it, haha.

Imma chime in with some stuff daizee turned me on to: Howard's Butcher Block Conditioner. Mineral oil, beeswax and some other stuff. Totally food safe. I keep some in an empty eyedrop container. You need to reapply after every use, but it's good stuff and doesn't take much to keep stuff protected. Available at your local Chrome Despot.

I use camellia oil. Used on sushi knives. A little more expensive but a little goes a long way. As you can see from this bottle I've had for about 6 months. Hasn't even gone below the cap line. Brilliant oil.

I don't even use a cloth/cotton ball as it would draw too much oil. A dab on my finger will coat one side of the blade very well. You can actually buy a purposely made applicator for this oil as well.

Can't go wrong if the Japanese have been using it for centuries on their blades. And not petroleum based either, from the camellia plant.

About $10 AUD for this bottle.
