I am looking into some new "Toys" and have heard good things about the rotary platen. Just kinda looking into getting some input before buying. Tell me what you guys think of this.

Not to be contradictory here, but I use the rotary platen. It's like 4wheel drive in a truck (well, around these parts anyway) you don't need it THAT often, but when you need it, it sure is nice to have! :)

If you look over in the custom section I've got pictures in Lorien's WIP thread showing its use, as well as a small bit of commentary on why I didn't like it at first and do like it now :)

I'm with Nick on this one. I don't use it all the time, but when I do it's a great piece to have.

I use my rotary platen on every knife I work on. It's great for convex grinds and also for finishing handles. I highly recommend it!!

Ok...I guess i will do both a variable speed AND the rotary :) Nick...I have been drooling over that thread since it started. I think this will help me get smoother grinds, so i would like to get one...just wanted some thoughts on it first.

Rotary is great for Convex grinds. That's about all I use it for. Like Nick said, if you need it it is indispensable.

We had a small group from church of 5 total amatuers grinding blades here for a couple months every monday night. Only one person could grind on the flat platen but everybody could grind a beautiful convex on my rotory platen.

I love mine.

I have been playing around with the drawings, and will be building into the new shop a large grinder. It will have the rotary platen mounted above a 6" flat glass platen, and a 6" wheel at the bottom. This "combo-platen" can be tilted such that the rotary is forward, or the 6" wheel is forward. It will be running 132X2" belts on a 3HP motor. The drive wheel and tracking wheel will be 3.5" wide. By changing the arm, I can also run 3" wide belts on a dedicated flat platen.
