I was rummaging through my Harness Jacks yesterday, looking for a likely candidate to provide a pattern for a knifemaker, when this Case jumped out at me. My accumulation of HJs includes some minty beauties, and some near junk, and all manner in between.
This one is a particularly nice knife, but I was quite dismayed to see it's condition. The slick Black handles, likely a celluloid, are off-gassing and eating the knife!
Fortunately, I found this rotten apple before the barrel turned nasty! No, I don't keep them in a barrel, but none of the adjacent knives have been affected, and I think the oil on the blade kept it from corroding.
The knife will never be pure Case again, as I will have it rehandled in something distinctive so it can't be "passed off" as original. I'll also ask the re-handler to sign the liners. It will make a great pattern, especially since it can be fully taken apart! Then I can show you a nice custom knife that will arise from the ashes like a Phoenix!:D

A gentleman are you, sir, and a connoisseur of fine cutlery!

You take the high road all around.

I can see why you have a thing about celluloid Charlie:(
Glad you found it in time.

Its certainly a good thing you found it before it was to late.

What a great pattern, and an even better idea. I can't wait to see what it looks like after the facelift :D

What a gasser:D:eek:

Nevertheless, it's a damn beautiful pattern:thumbup: Going for a re-scale, but what material? Ebony, Micarta,Bone?

Have your knifemaker make a copy with ebony handles.

What a gasser:D:eek:

Heh heh - Perfect!

That's a great old Case, Charlie. Good thing you caught it in time. I'm looking forward to seeing the result of the makeover.

Come to think of it, I have a XX slick black in my oldies case. So far, so good, but maybe it's time for some preventative isolation...

It has certainly made me rethink my storage. You also have to look at them more often.
Thanks for the complimentary comments, and even the jokes!!:D

That is a great pattern! I wish the boring tool blade looked like that still.
