I was rummaging through my Harness Jacks yesterday, looking for a likely candidate to provide a pattern for a knifemaker, when this Case jumped out at me. My accumulation of HJs includes some minty beauties, and some near junk, and all manner in between.
This one is a particularly nice knife, but I was quite dismayed to see it's condition. The slick Black handles, likely a celluloid, are off-gassing and eating the knife!
Fortunately, I found this rotten apple before the barrel turned nasty! No, I don't keep them in a barrel, but none of the adjacent knives have been affected, and I think the oil on the blade kept it from corroding.
The knife will never be pure Case again, as I will have it rehandled in something distinctive so it can't be "passed off" as original. I'll also ask the re-handler to sign the liners. It will make a great pattern, especially since it can be fully taken apart! Then I can show you a nice custom knife that will arise from the ashes like a Phoenix!
