Rotties & Pits

It seems that every dog thread here turns into a Pit & Rottie bashing session. That realy tweaks the nerve up the back of my neck! [I have Rotties, of course...]. Yup, they're big, strong, protective, territorial, intimidating and determined. They are also extremely intelligent, gentle, loyal, obedient, protective, territorial and determined!:D Too many people get these breeds and have no idea how to train or control them, or they want a snarling, barking beast-animal in the front yard. And the breed suffers tremendously! Makes me sad!!
So, if I beat the hell out of my neighbor, does that make all knifemakers dangerous, unpredictable neighbor-beating maniacs? Of course not! It's too bad that these dogs can't be looked at as indeviduals as well. Just because they make headlines every time something happens does'nt mean every one will attack ya!! I've been bitten by a Black Lab, a Beagle and a Maltese. None of these breeds are thought of as mean and dangerous, no headlines, no 'kill the Beagle' groups, no 'Black Labs are evil' speaches. The Maltese had bitten about 5 people, including a 7 year old. Yet, nobody's scared of a little fluffy white dog!! [I'd have shot that thing!!!] Every dog needs to be treated with respect and caution untill you see how they act. ALL dogs react differently to different situations!!

Ok, rant over. As I'm on Rottie #2 & #3 I'll defend them as they do not deserve the reputation they have. My 2 Rotties play with a buddies 2 pitbulls and my sisters 'mut'. No dog fights, no arguements, no attacks on people or wildlife. Just a yard full of dogs being dogs!!

So, if you have a Rottie or Pit, here's your chance to speak up in their defense. Lets have some pics and stories that show these amazing animals as they deserve to be seen!!

Here's my girls. Holley, bigger of the two, is 6 1/2 years old. One of three of the smartest dogs I've EVER met. I could tell you stories that I know you would'nt believe. She's definately one of a kind!! The other is Ginger. Year and a half old, spent her first year in an appartment in Staten Island. Nothing but a barking clown! Come & meet them and see the true nature of these 'mean & dangerous' animals. [just do NOT kick my door in at 2am, they ARE Rottweilers!!]

Randy- Since your thread is up a day after my post about a Rot trying to bite my dog, I'm figuring you felt like I was bashing on them.

If you go back and read my post again, you'll see I'm not.

My neighbor had a male and female for the 10 years they lived there that were great dogs (Rambo just didn't like other dogs coming around). My uncle bought my cousin a Rot after a couple girls had been raped at her college. His name was Oscar. Oscar started off as the runt of his litter, but grew into a 150 pound mutant! LOL But he was a VERY gentle dog and would lick you to death way before he'd think about biting.

Very handsome dogs you have there BTW! :)

I don't have take issue with the entire breed of dogs like Rots or Pits- I do take issue with a lot of owners. In the grand picture though, you have to admit the potential for a dangerous dog is much greater with those breeds... a lot easier to make a man eater out of a Pit-bull than a Westie! LOL But that's on the owner!!!

My post was about another dog trying to hurt my dog, that's all. It was more scary because it was a type of dog that's obviously very powerful. I don't disagree with you in the slightest that ANY dog can be a problem dog, but if you had the choice of being cornered by an angry dog with no way of defending yourself, which would you prefer the dog to be, a pit-bull, or that Maltese? ;) :foot:

It really does all come back on the owner--- but when it's that actual moment of having a dog run at you--- that doesn't really give you much comfort. What would you have done if you were in my shoes at the time?

Nick, I sure did'nt mean this thread as an attack on you. I would protect my family & dogs against ANY threat, as would most anyone. But, you have to admit that any time a group of people discuss dogs, somebody goes off about Rotties & Pits. Usually without good [personal] cause. In the past I've held my tongue while reading some really stupid remarks & comments. I'm not looking to argue with anyone or create bad feelings, I just want to give these guys some 'fair' exposure. I've always avoided 'dog' threads because of the general publics reaction to these breeds. But, as a responsible owner of two very well behaved Rotties, I felt they needed a good word. If I don't defend them, as an owner, who will? If 100 people say they're bad dogs and nobody says otherwise, everyone will just assume they're bad dogs.

So, if you have a Rottie or Pit, post a pic & say something good about them!!!

Thanks Randy :)

I can totally understand you wanting to show a good light on them!!! People, in general, are way more vocal about bad things than good--- so big kudos for stepping up with your dogs! :)

I wish I had pictures of Rambo and Roxxie, they were great looking dogs... a lot like yours. Except his head was too big to fit down into a 5 gallon bucket  :) Rambo would let their three little girls ride him around like a horse. :D

One of my other uncles had a GREAT pit-bull that would go out on 20 mile mule rides with my Dad and Uncle--- and he ended up shot dead in the ditch near my aunt and uncle's house.:( I'm sure by the type of guy who overgeneralizes and doesn't look at each dog individually, just like you're talking about. And that is just plain sick and wrong. He was a family dog that never hurt anybody.

I'll try to find a picture of Bosko around here out on a mule ride and post it if I do.

Just because I have a big 'ol fluffy Golden doesn't mean I can't appreciate other dogs:D I have tons of experiences with Rotts and if I were in a position to have more than one large dog right now they'd be on my short list:thumbup: I don't have too much personal experience with pits, so I can't speak either way for them, but I've spent LOTS of time with Rotts and I love 'em to death.

Thanks for stopping in jonnymac. I really did'nt want to twist your thread into what this could turn into. I think anyone who gets to spend some time around a well-behaved Rottie would never look at them as their reputation would indicate.

Like you, I appreciate all well mannered dogs. Just a level of integrity that you can't understand unless you experience it. Nice lookin' Golden. They seem to be puppies all their life!!

I've never had a problem with Dobie's or Rotts but do have neighbors who had one of their Pits kill their other Pit.

I have always wanted a Rottie!!! Are they hard to find as a Family dog? When my 2 Labs have passed I will Be looking.

My mother had a Rot , sweet as a good friend/dog could be . A pit attacked him , he got tore up real bad and had to be put to rest . I've known good and bad in both breeds . As Nick and others have said , a good dog and a bad owner can make for a bad dog .

I can only say that I have had more trouble with non-Rottweiller/bully breed dogs.

I have had as part of the family Rotweillers and pit bulls and currently American Bulldogs. All are good with young to old but, are protective of their people and home.

A picture of the monsters.

Dave, get one as young as possible. It's hard to change their mind after a year of bad habits.[not impossible, but hard]. The more time and attention, the better. Once they see you as the alpha male, you can teach them just about anything. Be consistant & firm and reward good behavior w/ lots of praise & attention and they'll never be more than a few feet away watching your back. A female will be YOUR dog, not aggressivly, but what you teach will be what that dog lives by. A male will be more a family dog. And be sure to socialize w/ people, kids, cats, other dogs, anything you want them to 'accept' as mature dogs.

Should'nt be too hard to find one, either. I'd buy from an individual & meet the parent dogs if possible. I don't think they are bread as close as Pits, but some breeders are more concerned with $$$ than ethics. Close breeding can produce dumb or unpredictable traits.

Not a breed to put on a chain and ignore, but properly raised, you won't find a better companion!!

So, as I stick my neck out to protect & promote these guys and get everyones blood pressure up, I ran an errand and come home to find that my 1 1/2 yr. old big city delinquent chewed a hole in my brand new shirt!! :o:foot:

Nick, did you call and tell her to do that??? :D:D

I'll agree that Rotts, Pits, Dobes and the like are not vicious breeds on average. Chihuahuas, Spanials and Poodles have them beat on aggression. Unfortunately though, the stats don't lie... more people/pets are seriously injured by the first group. Like someone already made mention to, it's more about the dammage they are capable of. They are the object of controversy for a reason. I've only been met with aggression from ONE Pitbull EVER and MANY times by other common pet breeds. I totally agree that it is more of an individual dog or improper training thing. I have two dogs and am very good friends with three dogs trainers, each from different disciplines. I am very comfortable around dogs so please don't lump me in with the paranoid lot. I just know what certain breeds are capable of.

Great pics BTW!... here are mine.... Pups to Pooches...

The problem is that the idiots/trash that want a fighter, are going to go with a pit, a rottweiler or a doberman. The statistics tend to be skewed by the nature of people who own the dogs, not the dogs themselves. Those that want a killer, wont buy a basset hound. No dog is completely predictable, and there is always a risk with owning a dog, especially a very powerful one, but many people have proved that the "dangerous" breeds are very loyal and great family pets. I love the pic of the kid rolling on the rot. It is very similar to my kids.

I just recently purchased a great dane for my wife and kids, and although they get very large and look intimidating, she mostly just wants to sleep. I got a good, lazy dog.

I had a rottweiler back when I was first married. I searched for months until I found a reputable breeder whom I trusted and got my name on a waiting list for puppies. I took a female because I wanted a smaller dog. Her name was Ruca.

To this day that was the best dog I have ever owned. We were very strict on her early on until she was properly crate, and house trained. We could take that dog outs front and tell her "down" and "Stay" and it didn't matter was distraction came by, that dog would not disobey. When we had our son, she would run to the crib and whine when he started to cry. We swear she had maternal instincts towards our son.

I have a German Short-haired Pointer and a Rat Terrier now. The short-hair is on crack, and only has two speeds, on or off, but they're both great dogs. They're not Ruca though. When these dogs pass, I've learned that I'm a Rottweiler fan. That is the breed I will own again.

Matt, I hear you on the big breeds being lugs at times. My neighbor raised Irish Wolfhounds... walking couches, they were. You would have never thought dogs that size (Gordo weighed 240lbs) would make a good house dog.

Michael... my family had a German Short Haired Pointer when I was growing up... man, I loved that dog.... Cocoa.
