Rouge on wood handles?

So I'm sitting on my porch this afternoon, with a nice bowl of Cherokee #3 from The Country Squire in Jackson, Ms for all you pipe smokers out there, and sipping on a single malt will scrubbing my YCS handle down with Murphy's Oil Soap to get all of that rouge out the engraved handle, and the thought crosses my mind "why is there rouge on this handle anyways?". Anyone know the answer?

I think it's what they rub in to get the red color in the wood, and it's just a pain to get out of carved handles so they don't try too hard.

I honestly don't bother either, I just let it rub into my dirty work gloves.

ETA: I used to love me a good pipe or cigar before I got diagnosed as a diabetic. <sigh> At least I can still have the scotch.

The Rouge probably gets in there from final polishing, all the khuks i've gotten from H.I have rouge in the handles, wether bone or wood.

The easiest way to get rid of it is just to sit down with some warm water, mild dish soap and a toothbrush and scrub all the little nooks and crannys clean.

Speaking of Spam, we used some in our eggs on the campout. It was pretty taisty!

As far as the rouge some of my Khukuris have come highly polished with the rouge. I think Uncle Bill said one time it was what they used when polishing. Even if I'm remembering wrong, I can think of much worse things to do then sitting on the porch in the evening working over the handle on a Khukuri. ;)
