Well, one of my main carry knives is the neat small Spyderco Chaparral FRN version, clipped to the opening of my shirt makes it always at the ready, even when lying below my car today :)
Slide it out, sliced open some JB Weld to slice off a section to apply on my 2010 Sonata which is starting to rust out a little from these NY highways in winter :(. BUT as I went to 'mix it up' the JB Weld as most might know is quite sticky and adheres to about everything, I had gloves on but it made my fingers clogged up with the material and closing the knife I realized I was applying JB Weld down into the nice textured scales ;) I tried to limit that and I was able to tear it apart tonight and cleaned it up pretty good but, it just goes to show that even while I use these knives for everything, I'm a bit of an OCD knuckle head when it comes to keeping them spick and span, go figure...But it made me realize that maybe I'll need a real down and dirty work knife that can take some JB Weld from time to time and I wouldn't get too upset, maybe.

Here's the little darling,

What do you guys and gals use for those times you don't care how it ends up looking ?

Kershaw Blackout. Fifteen+ years of service and still going.

#1 knife to be used on site without a thought is my old RAT 1 with a butterknife steel blade. After about 10 years the scales are smooth, the blade is scratched badly, but it still locks tight and still does its job. I clean adhesives, tar, butyl caulk, polyurethane sealers and on and on with brake cleaner or charcoal lighter fluid as needed. If I can't get dried crap off the scales easily, I just let it wear off in my sweaty pocket.

It dulls easily but sharpens just as easily. Just can't kill that damn thing!

My newest is a Harnds General with a tanto blade. Love it so far and it is already taking a lot of pocket time from my others in rotation.

I may be in the minority here Gary, but I use a Sebenza 21 for the down and dirty’s. Insingo blade. Once I got over the price of a Sebenza and started using it...it’s proven itself over and over. I use a PJ. Easy to clean and just works hard and stays solid no matter what I throw at it...sand, concrete dust, drywall dust, random pocket debris, caulking, grease....it just keeps on ticking.

Edit: Photo added for you, Gary. :D

Beautiful photo. Usually, the Recon 1 fits the bill for 99% of my EDC needs.

Ontario RAT 1 or 2
Available in AUS 8 or D2.
Made really well and tough as hell.
Price at about $40 or less.
I think it's the best knife I've bought for work.

image.jpg Another vote for the Rat 1.I am a painter so I have opened paint cans, cut Sheetrock, cut caulk out, and a ton of other dirty stuff. It always does what I need the only ding is the blade steel. Aus 8 needs to be taken care of a little more than I like but for the past few years it’s been my go to work knife. Just grabbed his little brother in d2 to see how that does.
